Connecting BD60 to router

Hope this is the right forum.

I'm trying to get a web connection through an Ethernet LAN using Cat 5E cable but am having trouble! The auto settings aren't evident and manual network settings (IP, DNS-IP etc) don't have any effect either, so presumably it's a connection problem? I've used a cheap LAN tester which seems to show all 8 wires OK, but when I insert the RJ45 jack into the router the tester still registers the wires OK but there's no indication from the router that the jack is in - is this a router problem?

I've just noticed that the BD60 manual says to use Cat 7 cable would this make any difference - unlikely for the connection but could affect transmission rates?

I've also noticed that there are "straight" and "crossed" versions of the RJ45 - how does one tell what is needed and would this affect the connection, the transmission or both?

Any other suggestions welcomed?
