HDMI extender: quality difference between Gefen and cheap ones?

I bought a very cheap HDMI/CAT5 extender from neetcables a few months ago, and connected my Onkyo SR606 and Optoma HD70 using CAT6 cables (put the plugs on them myself).

Worked fine, but somehow my Optoma projector got broken after a few weeks (wouldn't do hdcp handshake, even after using direct connection with hdmi cable). Since the projector worked fine for over 1,5 year and got broken up to two times in a short time, I'm suspecting the hdmi extender.

Could this be? If so, what is a good/reliable HDMI extender? I find a Gefen extender but that costs about 400 euro instead of the 75 I paid for the extender I use now!
