Phono audio over cat5e

Will phono audio over cat5 work?
I don't need it to be top quality, its only for TV audio to send upstairs to another tv (video is going be coaxial). so as long as there's no loud crackling or hissing sounds then i can use it.

Re: Phono audio over cat5e

Biggest problem is likely to be hum, particularly if the cat5 runs near mains for any length.

A balun at either end should help dramatically.

I thought of those, but because the lengths I'm running are only around 20-25m, it'd be cheaper to just buy the phono cables.
Was just seeing if the even cheaper option of running cat5 would work.

Cool, I've used more expensive ones at work.
I would be careful about the bass response though, baluns aren't too good for that.

I've run analogue voice over 100 of meters on cat5e, no problem. Having travelled several 1000m to get to your home, a few extra tens of meters won't worry it.

Re: Phono audio over cat5e

Separating the video and audio over separate runs is fine as long as you have the ability to make any required adjustment to keep the signals in-sync once you bring them back together at the TV/HiFi.

If you have video and audio over coaxial to the TV would it not be simpler to output stereo audio from the TV to a local Amp - most TV's have at least one audio Output.
