HD Signal over Cat5 - Connectors?

Hi

I'm after some advice. I have run some shielded Cat5 in my new house for transmitting my HD signal from Sky to a 2nd TV.

Am I right in thinking that when connecting the connectors that whatever I connect to one of the cable has to be mirrored the other BUT can it be any colour cable?

Also does anyone have any recommendations or where to buy RCA Component Connectors, is there good ones and ones to avoid.

Any help would be greatly received.

Thanks
Matt

Re: HD Signal over Cat5 - Connectors?

So running component over cat 5 then?
So you do have component out on your Sky+HD?

You use 3 sets of pairs form the cat 5.
So thats a pair for each of the colours.
These must be matched to be the same pair and way round at either end.

You will also need audio and I run this on another cat 5 this time using 2 pairs.

I used cheap rca connectors Plastic Phono Plug : Phono Connectors : Maplin and very pleased with the HD picture on about a 10m run of shielded cat5.

A set of 'helping hands' Helping Hands with Magnifier : PCB Stands : Maplinwas very helpful and some heat shrinkable sleeving to the keep the pairs neat.

Re: HD Signal over Cat5 - Connectors?

That was the plan but your comment around does my HD box have component outputs has got me worried. I recently had to have my Sky HD swapped as the old box went faulty. I think the new box is a Amstrad (still on the old EPG).

Having a wuick scan on the net it appears it may NOT have component out

What other options do I have utilising the cat5 cables I have run (one for picture and one for sound)?

Ideally cheaper optin the better as long as HD picture is delivered to the other TV.

Thanks for your help !

Re: HD Signal over Cat5 - Connectors?

Well if as you say there is no component output on your box then I don't think there is any 'cheap' way to do this.

The problem is compounded by the fact that if you do not have component out you now only have the single hdmi output for HD?

I have already looked into the 'what if my box was swapped and I lose component out'.

So to output HD you will need to split the hdmi output as you only have a single hdmi out on the Sky+HD.

So this is what I 'think' would be my options.

Something like...
Keene Electronics

or this...
HDMI 1 to 2 Splitter: J.S. Technology

Now you need to get hdmi to cat 5.

Maybe this...
HDMI CAT5E/CAT6 Extender: J.S. Technology

or something like this...
Scan HD-EX300 HDMI 1080p Extender Via 2xCAT-5e/6 upto 30m (1xSender & 1xReciver) - Scan.co.uk

Plus you will need at least two additional hdmi cables, 1 Sky+HD -> splitter, 1 splitter -> HDMI to cat5 unit.
You will already have one hdmi that you will use for splitter -> tv/amp

Re: HD Signal over Cat5 - Connectors?

SKY dropped support for analogue HD on 3RCA a while ago so unless you can source an 'old' SKY HD box you are limited to a single HDMI Out on any new box's.

It may be slightly less expensive to do HDMI>YUV converter > 1x2 YUV DA and then YUV over 3RCA to your 'local' Display plus YUV over your CAT5 cables (without using a Balun set) to the second Display.
