SAT NAV Databases, Newbie question

Hi guys

I have a wider knowledge of most AV, computers and electronics but I'm just looking to Sat Nav.

Looking at the tom-tom range am I missing something or can you only get the speed camera updates from tom-tom themselves (i.e. by paying). I assumed due to the popularity of these devices that there would be forums where you could download / exchange speed camera databases and other points of interest for free. I believe you can do this for the PDA’s the stand-alone Sat Navs different, can you not just get the latest database from a colleague and install it in your own tom-tom?

Or are there other Sat Navs other than tom-tom that do have the ability to download free databases.

Regards, Dave

Re: SAT NAV Databases, Newbie question

www.pocketgpsworld.co.uk provide the most popular camera database, but it costs £2 a month for updates. There are a couple of free ones too, but i have not used them.

You can install them on a wide range of sat nav devices, including all TomTom - PDA, Mobile and stand alone.

They are just special POI's, you install them like normal POI's.

Thanks for the reply, Looking at the Tom Tom 1 XL, apart for the 910 they seem to have Solid State Memory are these normaly sticks / cards?

You say you can add databases as POI do they come with free memory to be able to do this?

If not can you fit a larger memory stick / card?

Tom Tom website poor regarding technical data (not consistant) some products they tell you losts about other they tell you nothing.

Yes, the 910 has a hard drive but all other Tom Toms have their database on an SD Card. In my 510 there were only 6mb free on the card to add your own POIs but I've an XL now and there's a bigger SD Card as I have 32mb free on it.

You will need less than 1 meg for the entire UK's speed cameras.

Can I assume that the SD card can be changed for a larger one if required?

Re: SAT NAV Databases, Newbie question

Hi
I bought the new Tom Tom One V3 regional, which is UK only, it is the latest and comes not with an SD card but with a hard drive 512mb.
I went for the new Tom Tom one V3 because its small enough to fit in your pocket, also not two distracting on the windscreen, and appears to be well built all for £139.00 from Curry's.
It has built in speed camera warnings, and the new map sharing facility,
so if a road has altered for instance a road is no longer no entry, or the one way system has altered, you can change it, and inform other Tom Tom users on line so they can alter there's. Thats if they have the new map sharing on there Tom Tom's.
