Question Which Sat Nav. Tom Tom One or XL or Other?

Hi guys

Looking to get a sat nav for the misses birthday as she keeps asking for one.

Need something fairly easy to use that doesn't break the bank.

The tom tom ones look simple enough and seem well thought of, are they? Or any alternatives?

Is the XL worth the extra £40 odd?

What's the best price i should expect to pay? Seen the one GB for £150 and the XL GB for £188, anyone know of any better deals than this?

Cheers

Brighty

Re: Which Sat Nav. Tom Tom One or XL or Other?

Get the tomtom euro. I bought the GB tomtom one and I love it, so easy to use, very customisable with new voices and colour screens that you can download, loads of speed camera update sites, the unit is small and very very easy to use.

GB is great but I regret not buying the euro, for the sole reason that I may go to spain to france next year and it wouold be great to take the satnav but I'm gonna have to swap mine with my mates (who has the euro) for two weeks while I'm away.

Only prob with the xl is the size. The one will just about fit in your pocket comfortably, whereas the xl won't. I can't see where the extra £40 goes, it's not thinner than the one, just wider.

I found the best deal at PC World. Order on line then collect from instore. Hope this helps. Let us know what you buy and where you get it from. I may yet trade mine n for a euro.

Cheers Kaiesha

Think i'll go for the one then

If you have the GB version, can you not buy (or download) the Europe maps and put them on? The maps are just on an SD card are they not?

I've never driven my car outside the UK so don't think i'll need the Europe maps, does the GB version include Ireland?

Cheers

Re: Which Sat Nav. Tom Tom One or XL or Other?

The XL's screen is easier to read because of the extra screen size, IMO of course. Easily worth the extra money.

Last time I checked the XL's both use tele atlas (vs the old Euro one which used navteq). Beware though : the XL Europe has the maps in-built (the GB's on a card) and although it's easy enough to get a card to update, the maps supplied on the Europe are a cut down version to enable them to fit on 1GB internal.

For your info : One's that come with XL Europe Maps and Full Europe Maps

yes i know they say they're for the 910 and are 7ish pounds more but see the file sizes, check other sites, theres data missing. (oh and the 910 maps work fine on the XL's, or so i've read)

Im a big fan of Tom Tom. They're products are great and so easy to use! I would defo recommend. My nav has got me out a pickle many a time. Really worth buying. I just have the TT one which has been great but I may well upgrade to the worldwide one at some point. I think you can connect your phone through it for handsfree speaking in the car too

Re: Which Sat Nav. Tom Tom One or XL or Other?

i just bought a sony nv-u51 on ebay £132 posted and its miles ahead of the old garmin i3 i had so i'd recommend the sony.
it gives you 4 different route options(fast, optimum, slow and nice..yes i said nice ),about 7 options on your transportation means from fast/slow car, motorbike, foot, truck and so on.
its 3.5'' touch screen is very clear to read which is very useful on a motorbike however it is not bluetooth compatible and has no earphone socket so the audio directions are useless and you must connect it up to the mains supply when you are do any software updating.

hello from a newbie by the way
