Old post, but I have a question about this head unit, which I have my eyes on .

I currently have a Clarion CZ200ER, which also has rear USB (which is the main thing I'm after), but it has two nasty bugs that completely ruins it. I guess you get what you pay for (€100 on ebay), but I was expecting that it at least worked fundamentally.

1) Randomly, it will completely forget where I was in my playback on the USB drive and start from track 1. Happens like every other week or so, with daily use of the car. The radio is properly hooked up with good ground and all that, the previous radio I had also never did this.

2) I mainly listen to these really long MP3 files that are a whole album each (75-80 minutes). Every time I've had the unit shut off for more than 10 seconds (or for example, parked the car and came back the next day), it will have "rewound" the MP3 file I was listening to about 5-10 minutes, meaning that on my short trip to work, I keep listening to the same bit over and over.

Has anyone noticed any of these problems with the 811? Particularly problem 2) is a killer for me.

Thanks

1. I dont use a USB drive, but use the iPhone and have foudn that too. inexplicably it will forget and start with the alphabetically first track. No idea why.

2. This has never happened to me and i have dsome MP3's that are very long.

Ive been having some real issues with mine recently. I have narrowed it down to the Bluetooth connection which maybe the recent update to 4.1. Whenever i try and connect to BLuetooth as well as USB it plays about alot and the only thing for me to do is reset it (engine off then on again).
So now i only connect via bluetooth when i am up and ruinning on USB and TomTom is routing.

Alright, sounds good! Going to order either the 711 or the 811.

Noticed a new symbol on the top left of the display this morning, "LT".
I'm assuming it means low temperature as it cleared when the heater took effect.
It was cold this morning

Your probably right - I remember reading in the manual that it won't run the display when its around 0 degrees C as a precaution.

My problem is with an external harddrive. I've got all my albums on a HDD stored as artist / album, but when searching, have to pass through each individual album.

Any way I can search through artists, click to open, then search through albums?

Just got my 811 and installed it yesterday. This thing is awesome! The quality is great, and I configuring it was a downright pleasure. The three lines of text on the crisp LCD display are fantastic for easily navigating through menus and getting a lot of info about the track that's playing. It immediately played from my USB thumb drive without any problems. Tuning radio stations was also super easy, I just clicked a button and the first 6 stations it found were stored on presets 1-6. It also begins playing and switches input source quickly.

The adjustable color display was worth the extra money as well, I set it to an orange color that matches the interior lighting in my BMW.

Highly recommended .

Thanks, few UK Ebay sellers have got it for around £130, as have a few online specialist car audio centres, was just hoping to find it a little cheaper, lol!

Thanks, there's a few a little cheaper them on Google shopping too, but no idea if any of them are reliable - KD-R811 - Google Product Search

Did some Googling, took a chance and ordered from Home AV Direct as they seem to be legitimate. They also use City Link, and I get on well with their delivery driver, so he'll automatically drop it off at my work address if there's no answer, handy!

Arrived in good time, should hopefully be fitting it tomorrow morning, I'm sure routing the microphone will be fun!

Only a fortnight late, eventually got it fitted this morning, lol!

Top of dashboard out job to fit it into a Scenic and retain the stalk controls, came in handy for routing the mic cable though, so no harm done.

Paired and synced with my ZTE blade instantly, and transferred the phonebook across no problem too, liking it so far.

Forgot to say, needed to swap the yellow and red live wires around or it lost its memory all the time, weird!

PS, what USB sticks are people using? Looking to get a 16/32gb one to leave in the glovebox.

Little tip for anyone using this HU.
TomTom really screws this up.

Countless times the unit resets itself, doesnt play or refuses to respond to any buttons all when TOmTom is on.

So, what i do is get the unit plugged in and playing, then fire up tomtom and it all works smoothly.
If tomtom comes on first it plays havoc
No idea why, and not too much of a pita.

Hello,

I'm going to buy a JVC HU, but I'm not sure between 811 and 901.
I have a few questions :

- Does the 811 reads AAC files ?
- On 811 you can modify the colour of the buttons and the colour of the display separately, right ?
- Can you do the same (change of colours separately) on 901 ?
- It seems that 901 does not have active noise reduction, am I right ?
- Does the USB port provides current even when the source is not set to USB ? (so that it charges my phone when listening to a CD)
- Can anyone try to set a sort of USB-hub to see if it is possible to plug the USB BT dongle and to charge a phone ? (I only need current for the phone)

Thank you for your answers

@hot-fuzz: hi, good to find somebody who has the kd-r811 and using an iphone 4 with OS 4.1.

im thinking about buying this HU as well soon.

i have heard a lot of people complaining about certain issues when connecting the iphone 4 via bluetooth.

e.g. music playback interruptions and hickups, bad sound quality, not able to sync the phonebook/contacts etc...

my question to you is, does the kd-r811 really work with the iphone 4 OS 4.1 via USB and bluetooth or are there any errors/shortcomings that one should be aware of before buying this HU?

a response would be highly appreciated. thanks

greetings
cappz

edit: i have also contacted the JVC Germany Customer Support in regard to this matter. they told me, the KD-R811 is only compatible to the iPhone4 when using the bluetooth connection. they said, the KD-R811 is not compatible to the iPhone4 when using the USB connection.
hot-fuzz, can you confirm that information?
if so, i think it would be very poor because nowadays every head unit should be able to receive a firmware-update, e.g. via usb-stick, in order to have it constantly up-to-date and compatible to the newest mobilephone models, OS versions etc.

is there another JVC head unit which is compatible with the iPhone4 via the essential USB connection?

Hello

Does anyone know if this stereo will work via Bluetooth with two phones (iPhones) connected? So that if either phone rings, you can take the call hands-free?

Is that something all Bluetooth units will/will not do?

Sorry, I'm new to this game, thanks

Am thinking about buying this stereo. What extra features does the 901 offer? As it seems it can be had for just a few more £££'s

Also. I will be installing a TV into the back of my van. Will the JVC accept audio inputs from the TV to put the sound through the speakers?

Cheers

Which one did you decide on? Did you ever find the differences between the 811 and 901?

I am not sure because I could not find any review on the 901 but :

- 901 supports AAC
- if 901 is like 801 (same category), it does not have active noise reduction for bluetooth

Hmm, I am looking for a Bluetooth hands free stereo for the Mrs (needs USB / AUX etc too).
I had plumped for the Sony MEX-3800U but now I dont know if the JVC is a better bet?
They are both (the 711 as I can live without changing colours) £108 from Pixmania (used them before with no problems and 2 year warranty is good for me).
The gripes with the Sony are
1) Inbuilt microphone (you can buy external for £12 if not up to scratch though)
2) Cant see multiple text lines like the JVC (as far as I can tell)
3) Does not import phone book from what I read.
4) Cannot see SMS on the stereo (though I think that is probably dangerous tbh)

From what I have read the JVC has an included microphone, you can see extra folders and it imports the phone book. However, the quality wont quite be up with Sony, the remote looks a bit tacky and my MP4 player is a Sony so dont know if it will work with the controls so well.

Couple of quick questions please.
Why is there a Bluetooth dongle? Please tell me that BT works without that taking up the front USB? Actually just read that you have to do that (via the manual). I guess you use the rear USB and feed the cable out the front.
Do you have to point the remote at the unit? (if so a BT version would have been much better)
Does the JVC charge USB devices ?
Did anybody else look at the Sony?
How quick/slow is the JVC to go through MP3's via USB etc? (The sony Zappit feature looks handy).
Is the unit / remote simple to use for standard functions (not worried about advanced stuff as you wont be looking at the road for them) such as selecting who to call, playing your mp3s etc?

Any other advice would be great too.

1. The BT dongle takes up hte front USB port (or the rear if you chose) and the rear is left for any connection. I have mine feeding into the glovebox and when i need it pull it out to connect to the iphone that is in a Brodit Mount.

2. Yes

3. No, I did have a pioneer before and sent it back within a day, it was awful

4. Bit slow, takes a good 30 seconds to get through 15 mins.

5. Never used the remote, easier to use functions on the HU itself, 3 clicks gets you dialling a contact.

I would be looking to have another audio input going into the JVC (a tv in the back), but don't really want to use tge front aux port as it would look a mess. Are there any other inputs on the back at all?

Also any reccomendations for speakers? It's for a van install. 4 inch at the front and any size for back. Don't really want to have to get an amp or sub at this stage. Budgets a big factor. Maybe £90 for all 4 speakers!

Does this Head Unit auto connect with iPhone 4?
I am a fast food delivery driver and I'm sick of having to wear a bluetooth headset so this looks great. Problem is I do not want to have to connect my iPhone everytime I get back into the car. If anyone could let me know that will be great!

Thanks.
