Repair or replace Ford 6000 CD unit in a Focus?

My Ford Focus 6000 CD radio unit now says "phone" on the display, even though I don't even have phone kit!

I can't switch it to CD or radio, although it will occasionally play the radio for a couple of seconds before going back to "phone".

Is that a fault that can be repaired - or reset - easily?

Alternatively, is it possible to put a different branded unit into the space but use the existing speakers, and even steering wheel remote control?

I'd quite like to upgrade to a unit that is MP3 and iPod friendly without changing car!

Cheers

Try taking your battery off and but it back on. Yes you could replace the head unit and still keep the steering wheel controls with a different device. What year is the focus?

Thanks. Tried that but it still says "phone" after I put the keycode in.

I suspect a poor connection/corrosion/oxidation and would try checking the connections at the back, but I don't have the removal tools.

If I have to buy the tools I'd rather put the money towards a new unit.

If I do get the unit out can I add an Aux lead? There is no aux socket in the glovebox.

I bought the Focus in April 2006.

on this model there is no aux input so you would have to buy a after market head unit

Disconnecting the battery had no effect.

Is there some kind of "factory reset" button?

The "Phone" will be displayed when the mute facility is triggered by a connected phone kit.
On earlier models this fault would occur with nothing connected to the necesaary pin as it was the processor failing and ws pretty much scrap I'm afraid.

Thanks.

I managed to persuade a friendly chap at Halfords to take it out for me for free and reseat the cable.

For the moment that, or at least the disturbance of the unit seems to have restored functionality.

However, if it fails again, I'll just replace with a third party product.
