xCarLink into a VW Gamma

I own a 2003 Passat with the factory Gamma head unit (no CDP). I'm thinking of adding a CD shuttle, or another option would be the xCarLink MP3 player.

Does anyone have experience with the xcarlink into a VW Gamma, and if so, how does it sound?

I'm also interested to know where in this setup the DAC lives. Is it in the xcarlink, or does the Gamma head unit have a DAC which converts the digital signal from the xcarlink? If this is the case I could easily be swayed to purchase one (even a cheaper one from Hong Kong via eBay).

Many thanks.

I remember reading somewhere that there is some odd connections to do with the radio and diagnostic connector in most if not all VAG (Volkswagen, Skoda and some others) vehicles that involves power (12v from the battery). Some of the connections are non industry standard, and you WILL blow something. It is only certain to be ok if you use products made by VW group, so find out and be very very careful if you intend using anything made by another manufacturer. Sorry I do not know details, only that you must look into it first.

I'm using an xCarLink in my 2007 Touran, and it works like a dream. (I've got a V6 version, but won't fork out more money for v6 if you had a choice. The bluetooth is not great, and the USB connector is also not incredibly stable.)

BUT, the Aux in works flawlessly with the radio (acting as a second disk changer), and the audio quality is excellent.

I really can't see myself going back to FM-based MP3 playing!
