I need to have a look at someones in-car stereo but need to know how to remove it as it is secured in place.
What's the trick?

Depends on the stereo and the car. some are screwed in, some have flat release keys and some have round release keys.

MAKE MODEL YEAR of car and Make or confirm its the ORIGINAL stero which came with the came.
