setting speaker volumes

I've just replaced the four factory fitted speakers with infinity kappa's all round and added an active sub in the boot.

What I'm trying to find out is if I should let the sub handle all the bass as in literally turn the bass off on the kappa's and let the sub do all the low end work.

Is this the done thing or am i barking up the wrong tree

any advice would be much appreciated

Re: setting speaker volumes

Is your system (main speakers) running with an external amp, or just from the head unit?

In that case i'd leave the bass at a reasonable level for the main speakers. If you do upgrade later on and amp the speakers buy an amp with a HPF (high pass filter) this will filter some of the low bass away from the infinity's which will allow them to go louder without flapping.
By just turning the bass down within the tone controls of the head unit you'll change the character of the sound and it will become a bit thin, you'll lose all the mid-bass punch.

Experiment with it though and see how much you can turn the bass down to avoid distortion without it sounding naff. It's your car and your ears
