Navigon 4350 Max or TomTom XL Live IQ?

Which one should i go for?

I don't want to fall into the 'Everyone buys a TomTom' trap if the Navigon is going to be a better option....

The 4350 seems to have plenty of features and seems quite a nice piece of kit from what i saw in a shop tonight.

The live traffic updates appeal as i'm on the road quite a bit... Would i be right in thinking you have to pay monthly for this on the TomTom? And not on the Navigon?

Re: Navigon 4350 Max or TomTom XL Live IQ?

Hi, I have the 4350. I previously had a tomtom 520t, and a garmin 205wt. Both had traffic. The tomtom traffic worked really well, but the unit itself was so unreliable, it went back too often. I then got the garmin, but had to have one with trafic (tmc) because i found it really useful with the tomtom, but it never really worked on the garmin. I then had a navigon 3300max, but swapped it for the 4350 max due to the free premium tmc. And i have to say, its brilliant. No monthly fees. It uses local radio traffic announcements and the trafficmaster system, but the lifetime licence is paid for when you buy the unit. You also get 2 years of map updates for £17. Try and find tomtom or garmins updates and see how much they cost. So far the 4350max has been spot on, routing much better than the garmin, and more reliable and accurate than the tomtom. Navigon have come a long way with this latest batch of sat navs. Something i though id never say!

Re: Navigon 4350 Max or TomTom XL Live IQ?

hi

i was in the same kind of position yesterday , i went to halfords and looking at there sat navs , i was at first looking at the tom tom one IQ routes but after reading up a lot on here about the navigons i took the plunge and went for a navigon 3300max , so far ive updated the maps free of charge and got the latest speed camera update free of charge, i did have a few minor problems at first when i updated the maps but i think it was something i did wrong , today i will try it out for the first time on the roads.

one thing you have to think about is the price of the sat navs now days , i payed £400+ for the tom tom original when it came out but because there cheaper now i tend to take a gamble on different makes and models.

Re: Navigon 4350 Max or TomTom XL Live IQ?

the 3300max is indeed a great unit for the money, i had one for just over a month but took it back as the TMC didnt really work that well, so i swapped it for the 4350max, which comes with the TMC premium, which is absolutely brilliant, and incredibly accurate. Well worth the price difference. Also, with the 4350, you get the option of 2 years of map updates for £17, something you dont get with the 3300.

Premium tmc that works and is incredibly accurate.
Better routing, calculates 3 options of route depending on the time and day of the week, in the same time garmin and tomtom take to calculate 1.
Smoother scroling, no lag, so you don't miss that turning.
Instant re-routing, the garmins take ages if you go of course.

Could you guys recommend me a sat that that has.

Speed Camera,
Good POI
Traffic updates (Free if possible, not Sure what that feature is? TMC? Of is that the one oyu pay for?
Cheap to update maps etc/

I am still looking. See TT offers map share whch isn't too bad. There interface, graphics are better. But they are unreliable. Garmins, don't have good UK maps and they only update once or twice a year.

Navigon not really sure what so good about them, I don't like their maps.

Re: Navigon 4350 Max or TomTom XL Live IQ?

Mouse,
The Navigon 4350 has everything you want. The map updates are, like ive said, £17 for 2 years. They update their maps every 3 months. Garmin for example, will charge around £60 for a map update! TMC is the traffic update, now the free one (which i had on the navigon 3300 max and my garmin 205wt) is next to useless. The Premium TMC, which is free with the 4350, is incredibly accurate, and i wouldnt be without it. The mapping with the navigon, is brilliant. Much better than my garmin was, and also my tomtom. Yes, tomtom has mapshare, but the navigon has a similar feature, if you come accross something that isnt right, you can input this into the sat nav. The 4350 also has reality view pro, and lane assist, which is also really good, but most sat navs have reality view of some sort now. What impresses me about the Navigon though is the smothness and accuracy of the maps. I was very wary of the navigon units but read a few good reviews on them so thought i would take a punt, as i didnt want to go back to tomtom due to the issues, and garmins maps and traffic were poor.
I almost got a navman s100 but very glad i didnt.

But my TTv4 calculates numerous routes at the touch of a button?? Has smooth scrolling and no lag (unlike the Garmin I had).Never frozen up ever as well.

As i understand it, normal TMC gets its information from Classic FM, the RDS data and is around 50% accurate, where as the premium TMC is a paid service, but you get it free with the 4350, for life as well, and it takes information from traffic master as well as the rds broadcasts, and is accurate to a claimed 98%, and i have no reason to disbelieve this figure after my use of the unit. Its spot on.

Re: Navigon 4350 Max or TomTom XL Live IQ?

Thanks I managed to find them in the end.

I'm going to end up trolling this thread so apologies as I am having a look at the sat nav now and questions keep popping up that I may post so sorry for that.

Anyway, when you do a upgrade (£79.99) for navigon upgrade. Does this include a full package? Eg POI, Camera and well as maps?

What is normally inside a full package upgrade?

Does this apply to TT and Garmin too? You can have a full packedage upgrade. If so how much?

Also can you have a individual update say I only want to upgrade maps ONLY?

Re: Navigon 4350 Max or TomTom XL Live IQ?

The upgrade is only for specific models where the older and newer models are the esentially the same hardware but the newer model has updated software with more features. Look here NAVIGON AG - Maps & Services - Products - NAVIGON Software Upgrades

Map updates are separate and have thier own cost. If you buy a Navigon you get a code in the box to get 2 years of 3 monthly updates for ~£15 [normal price £79.99].

Click the links on the left hand menu under 'Products' for prices of maps and extra features. Not all of these extra features are available for all Navigon models. NAVIGON AG - Maps & Services - Products

Looking at the spec of the 4350 Max on the Navigon Web Site, it says that the Premium TMC is an extra cost.

This is borne out when you visit their products page and it lists the 4350 Max in the purchase drop down box.

Can people explain how their premium TMV was free. It appears that only standard TMC is free.

Halfords supply their 4350max with the premium TMC. When you hook it up to your PC and download the Navigon Fresh software, you will see that you have the premium TMC. Oh, and the 4350max from halfords has th better screen mount too!

Is this free premium TMC offer only available through Halfords ?

Also, is it a special offer from halfords or standard on all their current 4350 Max units ?

As far as i know, only Halfords supply it like this. If you buy direct from Navigon, which is more expensive, you dont get the premium TMC. Its a bargain from Halfords.

Well, I've just bought mine and I'm mightily impressed. Also had to call the helpline number to arrange for the Premium TMC to be enabled for free download (0871-2880154). If they need any prompting, just tell them to look on the box of the UK version from Halfords and they'll sort you out.

Weirdly, I wasn't able to select speed camera alerts until after I had paid for and downloaded Freshmaps - presume this was a glitch for me as no-one else seems to have had this problem.

Great routing though - nice looking product and the satellite locking is pretty quick, a matter of seconds normally. Bluetooth works well - decent enough speaker although the mike is apparently quite muffled for the other caller, YMMV depending on where you have the device located - mine is attached to the bottom of a very angular, raked windscreen so quite a long way away from where I sit. Also doesn't help that my engine is quite loud

But couldn't recommend it highly enough - 3 route options all calculated very quickly, relatively easy to use (although I'm a bit of a geek, wife might not find it so easy) and a nice looking toy.

Now how do I get it to play DVDs??

I have followed this thread with interest as I have been concidering a 4350 max from Halfords. Seems a good unit but I am concerned that Navigon use an 0871 premium rate number for contact-would appear that if the unit goes wrong, even within the guarantee period, I will have to pay through the nose to contact Navigon. Also seems that if problems with downloads would have to pay to contact them to put it right. Can anybody tell me their experiences of contacting Navigon, how quick they answered, did they offer a call back, were they helpful? I think if I can be assured that this is OK will purchase.

Yes, greyhound74 (nige) many thanks for feedback. My only concern is one day old faulty unit? Did they offer repair/replacement? Unit certainly looks good and if it does everything it states then good value.

Ditto to that - phoned them to get Premium TMC working (something I think everyone has to do) and it was sorted very quickly without any real fuss. Guy even called me back rather than making me wait on the line.

I was unable to turn on safety camera alerts until after I selected the information button. It's probably so the disclaimer about restrictions of use in certain countries is displayed before you can turn the option on.

Premium TMC installed out of the box for me. You can check it in Fresh under "My system", or on the device itself under "product information" in the options - should say PremiumTMC-UK@TrafficMaster2009(1.0.0), among others for different countries.

Have you tried using Fresh in compatibility mode in Win7?

I downloaded Fresh a few days ago and it stated on their website that it is Windows 7 compatible. i downloaded and it installed without any issues on my Windows 7 laptop. Maybe they have updated the software in the last few days.

Also, Premium TMC appear to be correctly included in mine - listed in Fresh Services and on the devices product information screen.

One issue I have found is that it does not seem to include teh traffic cameras - what would these be called in teh Services list ?
