Canon uc9 hi - Won't accept tapes

I have a raft of old video (hi-8) tapes in the cupboard. Last yea we started the old girl up and watched our wedding vid form 10 years ago, and converted it to dvd no problem. This yea we wanted to show the kids some of the Disney holiday vids we had on Honeymoon, but the camera is point blank refusing to load the tapes. If it's empty it does what it is suppose to, but once a tape in it just stis there for about 30 seconds, then opens again... any ideas?

I expect it's something as silly as a sensor gone in the tape holding compartment. Probably thinks I'm inserting the wrong tape (Same size/shape as tape backup carts, just different id patterns) Just wondered if anyone else has seen anything like this.
