Decent microphone for Sony xr520ve

Can anyone recommend a decent microphone for the Sony HDR xr520ve. I'm interested in better sound, and a reduction in wind noise. I've seen less than encouraging reviews (Amazon) on both the ECM HGZ1 and ECM HST1. I realise that it must be a Sony mic, or a third party product which is compatible with their active shoe.

You can buy a active shoe to normal mic adaptor and can then get any mic you want including rode mics.

Re: Decent microphone for Sony xr520ve

Thanks for that really useful advice, I didn't realise that!! Are these adaptors common i.e can they be easily purchased?
Having said that, are there any suggestions (be it Sony or other), at a price of up to about £100?

Thanks again.

Re: Decent microphone for Sony xr520ve

Thanks.

I assume that the adapter doesn't carry the power from the original connection to power the mic.

No the mic will have its own battery and be plugged into the cams external mic input.
