SD or HD ?

I'm after a camcorder to replace an existing Sony - must be compatible with Vista for editing etc (the Sony didnt like XP or Vista).

Would prefer Sony to match existing equipment but wondering whether to get SD or HD?

Likely to be edited via Laptop running Vista - does it matter that it does not have a HD screen? Playback would be via HD TV.

Cheers!

It has to be hd for you now or in years to come you will regret it i think and if you change to avchd you will find editing much harder and need a new pc, the cheapest hdv cam is nearly 600£ and that is A canon hv30 being replaced by the hv40,the sony hc-9 is sonys only consumer hdv cam.

Re: SD or HD ?

Was thinking about this one:

Sony HDR-SR10(E)
Sony HDR-SR10E High Definition 40GB Hard Disc Drive: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

Laptop does not have Blu-ray though so not sure I would get the benefit??

you can still make avchd discs which are hd quality, avchd discs are just ordinary dvd-r 4.7gb discs with hd material rendered on them, but i do not think you will be able to do any editing with your laptop from avchd footage, the sr10 is a good cam for the price .

Although you can play AVCHD discs of a DVD dive you would need to have software capable of playing back the AVCHD discs
Also your PC hardware needs to be up to it

Re: SD or HD ?

I am in a similar dilemma, i am taking my 89yr old uncle to the d-day commemoration in Normandy in June - i was originally planning on buying a Canon Fs100 or FS11 orsimilar from Panasonic - but am now considering the Canon FH100 HD.

I shall be editing and burning to dvd using iMovie and iDVD 09 - what camera option would be the best?

I assume the dvd will play back in any player - both myself and my uncle have hd tvs.

Thanks for any guidance.

ordinary dvds will play in any dvd player but avchd hd discs will only play on certain blu ray players or a sony play station[ i know you say you are only making dvds].regarding the camcorder it depends on how much you want to spend , read the reviews in camcorderinfo.com etc i know they are often biased but will give you some ideas to think about, neading reading glasses a viewfinder is a must for me but others manage without one.most camcorders from the main manafactuars are good nowadays.

Thanks for your prompt response, yes been reading all the reviews till they come out the back of my ears! I suppose at the end of the day HD is more future proof - but must say the new SD models rom Canon and Panasonic - particularly those with long 50 -70x zooms - a novelty o know - but the money saved could go towards wide-angle converter and extra SDHC cards - decisions decisions!
