Problems adding new data to DVD with data already on disc.

Hello.

I hope there is someone who can help me.

I have no problems transfering my images from my digital video camera onto my computer. Using Picture Motion Browser I have no problems burning data onto a disc, BUT, every time I want to add more data to the disc, it tells me I have to erase the data that is already on the disc, which I don't want to.

How do I over come this. There must be a way of adding without erasing what's on there already.

If anyone can help, I'd appreciate very simple language, I'm not that good with pc jargon I'm afraid.

Thanks in advance.

Ysatis.

Re: Problems adding new data to DVD with data already on disc.

The way to add more data to a DVD disc with data is to use "packet writing"
This usually involves creating the disc as a DVD_VR .
This allows you to use as optical disc for incremental writing but such a disc is then generaly not compliant witth DVD video standard and may not be playable by most DVD players
Im not sure there is a simpler way of putting this
Your options are to fill the disc " at once"
Use multiple discs for different projects
Use te VR mode ( selectable from the camcorder menu)
or
Use HDD/SD card or tape camcorder, You can write to them as you wish

Re: Problems adding new data to DVD with data already on disc.

Thanks senu for your reply.

I'm afraid to say, most of it means nothing to me....I'm a bit green to all of this.

I've used the term data to mean my recorded images from the camcorder, I hope this term is correct and hasn't confused you, but it was the term used when I tried to add more.

Filling the disc at once is what I ended up doing as I still have my 'movies' on my pc, but I worry that they may get lost or deleted before I get chance to burn them. I don't really want loads of bitty dvd's. There are times when I might want to burn only 15mins. It would be quite a waste not being able to use the rest of the time on the dvd.

Use te VR mode ( selectable from the camcorder menu)
or
Use HDD/SD card or tape camcorder, You can write to them as you wish

Could you elaborate this for me as my camera is HDD.

It was confusing and sounded like you meant you have a DVD camcorder
Video is data so that bit I understand
Pls Ignore that post as it refers to a DVD camcorder used to " fill up" a disc periodocally

In truth you are better off using cheap once use DVD discs rather than rewritable ( which is what you seem to be doing now).Optical media is not as " fuss free" as magnetic or flash media when you need adding with data periodically.
The concept as using a DVD media as one you can fill from time to time is fraught with the risk of losing everything. It might then be that you are playing safe rather than " wasting discs"
It still boils down to the idea of " packet writing, UDF formatting and In some cases multi session .. terms you may not be keen to learn.. ( yet)
If you are worried you will lose your data, I suggest you simple make 1 or 2 back ups
For playing the video, you could get a HDD based media player, which you can play off any display. To share just make a single use DVD video

Re: Problems adding new data to DVD with data already on disc.

Thanks for the advice re: cheap discs. Not knowing anything about this, I just assumed one could just add to the DVD until it was full. Learning all the time,eh.

The application I use is (Sony) Picture Motion Browser that came with the camcorder, but I also have, but never used, Nero that came with the (external) burner.

I dont mean cheap and "not very cheerful" discs though..they are far more trouble than it is worth.
What I did mean is that DVD media discs ( once write) even premium ones are cheap enough to not worry about " wasting" them
It is possible but generally not advisable to use DVD media discs for incremental filling up.
In deed rewritable discs are usd mainly for "test" purposes before a long run of read only are made, rather than a datastore you can fill up gradually, in the way you would a HDD

Nero ( especially full versions) offer far more versatility with burning
PMB is terribly basic

Re: Problems adding new data to DVD with data already on disc.

With you now about the disc's, thanks.

Yes, I think I agree with you, PMB v Nero. I have looked at Nero and it scares me with all the functions. Maybe I should experiment...one day.

Thanks for your tips and advice, much appreciated.

Ysatis.
