I have a cannon MV901 and have just bought a new pc so would like to get downloading onto pc instead of putting everything on video. what do i need? what sort of lead do i have to get to connect camcorder to pc and is that all i need? pc has program on it and camcorder came with a disc

First off read page 67 of your manual.

Your PC needs a Firewire interface (IEE1394). As you have not told us what sort of PC you have, desktop, laptop etc it is difficult to guess.
If it has a firewire then you need the correct cable as explained in your manual and suitable software, Vista may help there (Windows Movie Maker).
If no Firewire interface then a desktop needs one of these PCI-3PFW - Dynamode 4 Port 1394a Firewire (400) PCI Controller VIA Chipset 400Mbps - Scan.co.uk you just take out a blanking plate, insert the card and Windows does the rest.
For a laptop you need either Lycom PC-101 Firewire 1394a 400MBps Cardbus PC Card 3 Ports (TI Chipset) for Notebooks PC/MAC - Scan.co.uk for Cardbus interface or DH-1394PCMCIA - Scan 2 Port PCMCIA Firewire 1394a (400Mbs) Adaptor/Hub - Scan.co.uk for PCMCIA interface.
Get suitable Video editing software from the likes Adobe, Ulead, Pinnicle etc and thats it.

Edit: Most software that comes with camcorders is usually pretty useless.
