AVCHD Editing on Vista64 (can't use Panasonic HD Writer AE)

Right, got my nice new HDC-SD20, taken some test video of my son's footy match today and have just got around to installing the HD Writer AE 1.0 that came with the camcorder and it doesn't like the fact I'm using Vista 64bit

I can't find any updates on the Panasonic website for 64bit support, so am a bit stuck of what to do.

So, can someone recommend a cheap and simple editing tool that supports Vista64 - all I really want to be able to do is grab the footage from the camcorder, make any minor joins/cuts and then write it out to a DVD.

Nothing fancy at all really, just very basic editing stuff!

Re: AVCHD Editing on Vista64 (can't use Panasonic HD Writer AE)

Anyone got any suggestions?

I've downloaded a trial copy of the Sony Vegas Movie Studio Plat and whilst it seems OK generally its crashed on me twice (not encouraging when editing three clips totalling 10 minutes!!)

You should be running version 9.0b. You mean actually crashed with an error and diagnostics message, or just froze so you had to reset the PC?. If the latter, it could be just your pc is underpowered and you didn't wait long enough for the action to be performed. If the former, it could be low memory issues or similiar. Mind you, if it's Vista... I have played with Version 9.0b on Win7 64 (running as 32bit) and it seemed to be OK.

Yep, downloaded the 9.0b trial today.

PC isn't underpowered in the slightest - Quad Core i7 920 with 6GB RAM and an Nvideo GTX280 and runs everything else fine.

Sometimes it uses all the cores to encode, flying through the video for a while saying it will finish in 10 minutes and then suddenly the CPU usage dies down to 1% and it starts doing 1 frame every few minutes with an increasing elapsed time (22 hours!!)

It won't cancel, so I have to kill it. Have rebooted and run it as the _ONLY_ thing and it does the same thing - tried four times to render video and hasn't completed once.

Currently downloading Premiere Elements 7...

With HD Writer, have you tried running it in Compatibility Mode as Windows XP

I have a similar PC to yours (iCore7 920 with 4gb of ram) and now use Premier Elements 7.

I tried Sony Vegas demo and had some problems - it wasn't crashing, but after a few edits I lost video for some reason (i.e. would only play audio).

I also demoed Corel and Pinnacle Studio, but settled on Premier.

I also find Premier Elements 7 easier to use.

Yep. Partway through I get a 'Vegas has stopped working'...

Uninstalling now and giving Premiere a try!

As I recall, Premiere loses your 5.1 sound and you end up just stereo.

Re: AVCHD Editing on Vista64 (can't use Panasonic HD Writer AE)

Hmmm, don't like the Premiere interface (or the fact they slap 'trial version' across the middle of the render) so not got as far as checking the audio.

I've just managed to get Vegas to work - went into Options->Preferences->Video and set 'Max number of rendering threads' to be ONE.

OK, so I'm wasting a lot of cores but it actually completed the render and let me write out a DVD!

Re: AVCHD Editing on Vista64 (can't use Panasonic HD Writer AE)

it may be out of your budget, but I use premiere pro CS4 on my i7 and it works perfectly and keeps 5.1 audio if you buy the surcode plug in or export straight to encore for DVD/BD
I had 20 video tracks of AVCHD for a music video I did and there was no slow down (I only have 3Gb or DDR3 RAM)

Re: AVCHD Editing on Vista64 (can't use Panasonic HD Writer AE)

Just installed panasonic HD writer AE 1.0 and got the same message in Vista 64 bit. I just ignored it and installed it anyway and it works fine . I have just got the HDC-HS20 but was able to import the first shoot content to PC and play it without any problems. So, just ignore the incompatibility message and go ahead and install it anyways. If the software is any good is an entirely different matter and I cannot comment on that for now.

Re: AVCHD Editing on Vista64 (can't use Panasonic HD Writer AE)

Hi i wonder if someone out there can help me. I have bought a Panasonic HDC-SD10 camcorder (and am very pleased). However I have installed the HD Writer AE 1.5 and downloaded my movies from the camcorder. However when I try to play the moview I get audio and not video.

My PC (6 months old) has an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66ghz processor, 2 GB RAM, with a Radeon HD 2400 PRO graphics card and I am running Vista (32 bit) - according to the HD Writer software this should be more than sufficient to run the videos.

I have done research but cannot seem to find any answers - would this be a codec issue?

I would be extremely grateful to anyone who can help me.

Thanks

Well ive installed HD writer 1.5 that came supplied with TM10, im using vista 64bit core2duo E8400 4gb ram nvidia 512mb 8800gt. It did come up with a warning that it wasnt compatible with my system but i forced it to install anyway and works no problem, didnt even have to run in compatibility mode.
