Some Sd broadcasts can be pretty poor on Hd sets more so on fully hd as opposed to hd ready .How did you input the footage

Re: sd output to hd tv

If the leads are all Phono and one is yellow then its composite video then which is the lowest quality. As said you will get away with it on a standard TV

True
Although HD TVs show HD in thier " glory" some are less kind to SD sources
Be that as it may , by using the " yellow phono cable " composite video: you are outputting the least quality from the camcorder
If it has S-video that will be better

Re: sd output to hd tv

The best quality you can get is to connect the Camcorder to a PC with Firewire (IEE1394) and create a DVD. That is the best quality you will get out of the Camcorder.
Composite = VERY POOR (Bottom of the rung)
S-Video = Not a hell of a lot better
Etc
Etc
HDMI = Very good quality.

In practical terms , Yes
However, if you want to play from the camcorder directly, that isnt an option

Also the " raw" footage from the camcorder " DV AVI " is the best quality but it isn't practical to use it for playback unless you have unlimited space and use a HDD based media player. to the TV

In creating DVD the DV AVI from the camcorder has to be encoded to mpeg2 .
This involves compressing it considerably which results in far smaller size, compatibility with DVD but quality is generally well preserved if well done
As such Mpeg2 ( on a DVD video) is very good but this depends on the encoder used and the bitrate employed to encode.
Encoders are not equal and some DVD transfers are poor

I agree with that

Not so, Actually s-video is quite a lot better if well implememnted

Usually but there are also cheap HDMI chipsets which are no better than Scart , hence the poor showing of some " HDMI" upscaling DVD players
Component video is good but SD camcorder dont have it . They also do not have HDMI

The OPs camcorder is MiniDV tape model and will most likely only have composit and S-video for playback to TV from camcorder anyway
