Re: sony dvd dcr dvd 100 camcorder

Never buy a DVD camcorder - the risk of losing everything you recorded on a disc because of faulty finalising (or inadvertently forgetting to finalise) is too great. Any other recording medium - tape, hard drive, memory card - is fine. Just not DVD.

Andrew.

Why not?
Tape is not "vhs" it is a medium to which digitally recorded video goes, notwithstanding that the video may ultimately be view off a DVD
The qualilty of video that gets onto tape ( at least at SD and pocket friendly levels) is better
DVD camcorders are merely a convenience IMHO

- having owned a Samsung MiniDV unit in a past life, I would try stretching your budget to a Canon or Sony model.

- it's not hard to transfer DV to PC, you just need a Firewire cable, a Firewire port or card in your computer, and software (Windows Movie Maker is free). There are only two "drawbacks" - the transfer happens in real time ie. 1 hr of video takes 1 hr to transfer (you could leave it while you do something else) and the resulting file sizes are very very big (roughly 13GB per hr). How much of a drawback these things are depends very much on your personal viewpoint. Some would suggest that SD/SDHC camcorders make things "easier" in that respect, and I would not disagree, but you have to pay a little more for the convenience.
