Home edited DVD wont play on Toshiba DVD player

Hope there is someone who can help with this one. I am new to editing and have only used the free software on a Sony Vaio latop. I imported some footage from my sony DCR-SR210 into the sony software and used the very simple template to arrange the footage to fit a piece of music. Again using the software on the laptop I created a menu and burnt to DVD. I then checked the DVD played on my Denon DvD player and my Dads Sony dvd recorder. I then gave the copy to my grandparents (its footage of my new born baby) and It wont play on their resonably new Toshiba DvD recorder. Does anyone have any ideas what it could be?

Two most likely problems would be disk format type eg +R or -R or it could be the brand of disc, some players are just fussy. Can you reburn on a different type of disc?

Thanks for the quick reply. I used a Memorex DVD-R. What is the difference between the DVD-R and DVD+R? Have I purchased the wrong DVDs?

It could be the particular player you are having trouble with just doesn't like the disc, I wouldn't say you had bought the wrong disc type or brand but it is worth trying a different one. I normally use Verbatim DVD-R, there is no wrong or right, I had a movie that would play in the PS3 ok but wouldn't play in the car dvd, changed to a different disc brand and perfect in both players.

Look here DVD Player and Blu-ray Player Compatibility List and type in your DVD make and model and it may give guidance as to what type of DVD's are compatible with your player.

Re: Home edited DVD wont play on Toshiba DVD player

I was led to believe that +R's were for the European units and -R's were Japanese. I too have compatability problems with some with disk's and some players . The main reasons for problems is the disk's have to be finalised if they were done in a home DVD recorder before another player will read them , but it should'nt be a problem if done on your laptop .Maybe the type of disk's ,speed and make . Try a few other makes of disk and report back your findings ..............

Re: Home edited DVD wont play on Toshiba DVD player

We have +R and -R due to different manufacturers producing different formats, a bit like the old VHS/betamax and Blu Ray/HD DVD formats. +R and -R are both here to stay though, one big difference is -R will only support single layer discs whereas +R will support dual layer.

Me niether , saying that most burners are now dual layer and multiformat capable, so choice of media isn't so crucial
Ive got an LG " multi" optical drive which in addition to reading BD and HD DVD burns to everything including DVD-RAM!!

One other thing is that some DVD players simply prefer one format to another and in the days of old when DVD backups were the norm, An otherwise excellent older Toshibas I had back in the day would not play from Backups DVD Shrink but they would from DVD decrypter!!
My Sony BD 350 doesn't not like most DVD video from domestic media. Coversely the Panasonic Bd 35 is happy with pretty much anything

A few of the Earlier Auto Sony CD players would not play Audio Cd compilations made from Cd-R ( regardless of brand)
