'Noisey' HD footage

Hi All,

I'm pretty new here and am after some advice. I have bought a second hand Sanyo Hd1000 to take away snowboarding. I've been testing out the recording at home to work out all the menu and settings etc. I can only describe the footage as 'noisey' when i watch it on my laptop. Is there a simple thing I have missed like a codec or something?

I've tried HD HR and HD SHQ but they both look noisey on screen?

The laptop is very new and is HD ready with a blue ray player so I dont think its that?

Any suggestions please!

Re: 'Noisey' HD footage

By "noisy," do you mean the image is speckly?

If you've been shooting indoors is relatively low light, then noisy video is practically a given: the camcorder will open the iris as wide as possible to maximise the light going in, and if it's still not enough will kick in the gain, which is like selecting a higher ISO on a stills camera: it increases the sensitivity, at the cose of introducing noise.

Andrew.

Hi Andrew,

Yes I would describe the image as speckly or grainy, so it must be the 'low light'

what would you describe as low light, do artificial 60w bulbs lighting a room usually not provide enough?

I'm not too worried as most of my footage will be taken outside.

"Low light" includes indoors under artificial lighting, and can be a bit subjective. But to my mind, unless you have at least 500W of light directed at your subject at relatively close range, you're in low light territory. You can have low light issues outdoors too, though - obviously around twilight and dusk, or in areas of heavy shade.
