New to Camcorders - How do I play / edit on my pc

I am a complete Camcorder novice although I am a keen stills photographer.

Today I bought a Panasonic HDC-HS9 HD Camera with hard disk and SD Card.

Have successfully recorded and played on my HD TV also copied using supplied software HD Writer to my PC.

I have not worked out however how to play the video on my PC in High Resolution. Do I need additional software to play and edit these videos on my PC. (I have Nero Premium 7)

Yes you do. Nero 8 has Nero vision which can edit AVCHD ( albeitwith not many frills) but most 3rd party software now can edit the hi def h.264 files

Re: New to Camcorders - How do I play / edit on my pc

To just play the video, basically you need a codec that can decode H.264 / AVCHD and a media player program that can use it OR a media player program that has a codec "built-in"...some examples:

ffdshow (free) this is not a player but has it's own H.264 codec
VLC (free) - player (you can use either it's own codecs or 3rd party ones)
CoreAVC (small cost but there is a trial) - codec
Oxygen AVCHD Player Lite (google it) - very good player with built-in codec
other commercial media/DVD/Blu-Ray player software i.e. Corel WinDVD etc.

There are quite a few other players you could try, different people have different results depending on their hardware specs, OS etc. In theory with the right codec Windows Media Player should be able to play back your video. Other examples are GOMPlayer, media player classic though I've never had much joy with those.

p.s. does the Panasonic software not have a player?

However many Editing software titles also have the playback codec and the likes of Nero have Nero Showtime which will playback while Nero Vision edits
Some Ulead/ Corel Packages come with both editing and playback software

Even Windows media classic ( especially withCore AVC pro)

GOM has never worked for me either . Media Classic and VLC do

A little note of caution about the K-lite codec pack which may be suggested elsewhere. it works ( very well) for some, but for others , it messes up thier system so if you want to give it go, backup your registry and be prepared to have it delight or dismay you
