Video Quality Issues Sony HDD DCR-SR82 and Sony Vegas Studio8

Hi there,

I've been searching the net to no avail. I recently did some video for my job using our office's Sony DCR-SR82. Now I need to edit this footage in high quality. When I import the video into Picture Motion Browser (the software bundled with the camera) the footage is digitized but acceptable. But when I look at the same imported footage on Windows Media Player it is VERY distorted and I can't work with it. Why does the footage look OK in Picture Motion Browser but so much worse in WMV? How can I keep the same quality but view my videos outside of PMB?

Another question:

I would like to edit using Sony Vegas Studio8 Platinum, but the program won't read my camera and I cant' drag and drop the mpgs into the program. PMB allows me to transfer to WMV, but Vegas won't read that either. Is there a way to get around this?

I know HDD compresses video quality, but I can't imagine it's this bad, what am I doing wrong?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

Im not sure what you are " doing wrong"
Sony Vegas definitely edit mpeg2. It doe not need to "read you camera" You can import the already downloaded mpeg2 files into it. No via drag and drop but using File> Import> media
It could be you need to " activate it" online or maybe there is a patch available but even in its native state Ver 7 ( which I use) quite easily inputs and edit mpeg2
Going from mpeg2 to WMV before editing is a very bad idea: it is a video quality killer

Re: Video Quality Issues Sony HDD DCR-SR82 and Sony Vegas Studio8

Thanks for the reply. Vegas studio isn't reading my mpeg2s even when i import them. the problem is definitely that the camera saves the files as both an mpeg and sony's mysterious ".modd" file type. vegas won't open the modd so i get an "unsupported file error." Anyone familiar with Sony's Picture Motion Browser and how to manipulate your mpeg and modd files at full capacity?
Thnaks again.

Re: Video Quality Issues Sony HDD DCR-SR82 and Sony Vegas Studio8

I think I can state my case more clearly. I filmed a bunch of things using the Sony SR82. When I watch them in Sony's Picture Motion Browser they look fine (not great but I think that's the best they'll get).

When I open them in Windows Media Player they look awful, all digitized and pixelated. They won't even open in Sony Vegas Studio. The files are saved as mpegs but each file has a ".modd" file attached. I was wondering if there is a way to edit using these files without losing all the video quality. Do I have to convert them? How? Thanks in advance....

Re: Video Quality Issues Sony HDD DCR-SR82 and Sony Vegas Studio8

I have kinda similar issue...except the mpeg files play video fine in Sony Vega Studio.

Have Sony Handy Cam 40GB DCR-SR46 that came with a Sony Picture Motion Browser V3.0 software to enable you to burn videos to DVD.

I download the movie from hard drive of Camera onto to PC and then i burn the movie files (MPEG-2 which the software automatically creates) onto DVD using default setting of software with no problem.

Hoever when i play the DVD on my TV, it plays fine except after halfway
the video starts distroting and making n squeaky noise bit like when your Sky digital TV starts getting interrupted during boradcast and images start being jittery and audio is jittery too.

As the clips are fine and so is the few DVD disks i tried, i chose to install Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9 and thinking the basic software wasnt burning the data properly. Bit like going from MSpaint to Adobe Photoshop

But now i cant hear audio from the same clips that play fine in Picture motion browser. This is when i play clips on PC using Sony Vegas software. Havent burned anything on DVD yet as was just testing to see if the clips play fine under this software

I can see Picture Motion Browser created .mpg and corresponding .moff files for each clip.

Is there someway i need to tell Sony Vegas software to associate audio with the MPEG files? i thought audio was embedded into the mpeg file ??
