Advice needed JVC v's Canon

Hi

I am buying my 1st camcorder for the imminent birth of my daughter, fighting over the last 3 years with the video feature on my digital camera with poor results.

I am looking at the JVC Everio GZ-HD3 60GB full 1080 HDMI 3CCD or the CANON HG10 40GB HDD HD CAMCORDER both of them are on offer at £379.. The JVC is ex display and the Canon is brand new.

I hear that the audio on the Canon isn't the best and the cover that hides the attachment bracket can come off and get lost, also the viewfinder doesn’t tilt.

I hear the JVC has tackled the sound issue but doesn't have a viewfinder for those sunny moments and may have compatibility issues?

My 1st question

I run vista 32 on both pc and lap top, both have high graphics cards and sound cards in them, will I be able to easily edit HD footage on the pc?

My 2nd question/s

JVC or Canon? which is best for the cash? Would you buy ex display/customer returns that are warranted?

Thanks in advance

Berty

The HG 10 os a good camcorder, those comments are (IMHO) nitpicking

Which Processors and amount of RAM do you have? The OS and GC are a bit less impt

Canon, but that is not to say that they dont all make duffs
In some ways the brand matters a little less than the inidiviual camcorder

Re: Advice needed JVC v's Canon

Nice one thanks

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E7300 processor

2GHZ RAM

I heard the compatability issues are with the editing of the footage you take in HD with the JVC

The PC will do fine
As for compatibility with JVCs footage, Im not as sure but it wouldn't surprise me
Saying that, virtually all AVCHD camcorders have issues with some software or other... much less so now than earlier

Re: Advice needed JVC v's Canon

The JVC actually uses mpeg2 1080i ( HDV) but unlike other such camcorders does not use tape so they are actually different camcorders in sofar as they are both Hi def HDD models
The Canon is AVCHD and is far more needy of a beefier PC

Re: Advice needed JVC v's Canon

Mpeg2 1080i ( HDV) is easier to edit but JVCs version may not be as easy as the tape version..
AVCHD is far less easy to edit in general
Both have relatively decent quality

Re: Advice needed JVC v's Canon

Thanks for your help, so would you go for the Canon over the JVC at the same price?

Re: Advice needed JVC v's Canon

Yes but reading your thread about a non core duo PC I fear AVCHD might be hard to edit

Re: Advice needed JVC v's Canon

How about the Panasonic SD9 at £339? Play.com (UK) : Panasonic HDC SD9 High Definition Digital Camcorder : Electronics - Free Delivery or did you particularly want a hard drive camcorder? The HG10 is getting a bit long in the tooth now (though that does not mean there's anything wrong with it). In fact the SD9 is no longer a current model either.

Re: Advice needed JVC v's Canon

Hi

Does this still record in the same format? I haven't even looked at editing software are there any that you would recommend for beginners? I was thinking of just using windows movie maker?

It's AVCHD onto SDHC cards.
