New small form HD Camcorders Vs Larger Tape Camcorders

Hi hopefully you can help.

I am looking to film music videos.

To start with the videos will be for YouTube & other websites.

I will though want the videos to be high enough quality so that music channels such as MTV will still be able to show them.

I'm looking at lots of different cameras from Canon HG20 through to sony Z1 and the more i look the more the brain clouds appear.

I really need to know what cameras are viable options and what sort of budget i am going to need.

Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks
Paul

The z1 and hg20 are very different cams and use different recording, the z1 hdv the hg20 avchd, the sony is semi pro and the canon consumer,,there is a vast difference in size of these cams.
you have to decide how much you want to spend, what format and then which model,i have a sony fx-7 and sr-12 and i think both could do what you want as could the cams you mention.

Re: New small form HD Camcorders Vs Larger Tape Camcorders

Some would even say the Z1 is Pro

While the smaller consumer camcorders have become very accomplished in ability, the larger Pro ones are still way ahead for any video which may end up being broadcast even if the recording format were identical
For simple You tube they may be OTT but many videos on You Tube were shot with those superior camcorders and compressed for web use
If you buy the smaller ones it will soon become clear if they later prove inadequate for your needs
Music videos tend to need low light friendly camcorders and may strech a camcorders ability. In these instances the limitations of consumer kit will show earlier than the bigger kit as they may struggle

Given that the Beeb use it, I'd say it was pro

Re: New small form HD Camcorders Vs Larger Tape Camcorders

the z1 is replaced by the z-5 which has more features as has the tapeless ex-3,i am sure sony would confirm they are in the upper semi pro cam possibly bottom line pro but great machines if you have someone to lug them around for you.

It seems in the sony world hvr is pro and hdr consumer.Very stange that would put the V-1 pro and the hdr-FX-1000
consumer.
