Sony DCR-HC96E. 16:9 vs 4:3.

Hi,

I am trying to figure out how to capture the video taken with a Sony DCR-HC96E we have at work. The camera has a widescreen monitor on it. When I playback the video and looking at the monitor on the camera everything looks ok in the 16:9 format.

But when I capture the video to the computer (have tried both USB and Firewire) it seems like I only get 4:3. And this causes persons in the film to be a bit "pushed".

Also, the resolution seams to be very low. I can select much higher then 320*240.

As you noticed I am not an expert at this. So I would really appreciate all tips

Regards
Erik

Well you have forgotten to state WHAT software you are using on your computer?
Most software has to be told to work in 16:9 in the settings. The original Adobe premiere had to set at boot up if I remember and before you download any film from the camera.

Re: Sony DCR-HC96E. 16:9 vs 4:3.

Oh, sorry!

I tried Windows Movie Maker when capturing using USB. And I went for WinDV when I tried Firewire. Didn't really find any 16:9 settings :$

Re: Sony DCR-HC96E. 16:9 vs 4:3.

It is in Windows Movie Maker "Tools", "Options", "Advanced". In the UK you need PAL not NSTC and either 16:9 or 4:3 your choice.

AND in Windows DVD maker you also have a options setting. Took less 1 minute to find both?

Re: Sony DCR-HC96E. 16:9 vs 4:3.

Thanks alot!

You are right, I should have looked further. It's just that I though you made all settings to video quality and aspect ratio in the wizard. There I just couldn't find it

Gonna try this first thing in the morning when I get back to work!

Re: Sony DCR-HC96E. 16:9 vs 4:3.

Did change the Video properties in Windows Movie Maker to PAL 16:9. But no mattar what Video Settins I select in the wizard it sets the resolution to 720*576.

Can't I capture video to a 16:9 resolution like one of the following?

852x480
1280x720
1365x768
1600x900
1920x1080

Re: Sony DCR-HC96E. 16:9 vs 4:3.

720*576 is the correct setting. The aspect should be correct once viewed on a DVD player.
BUT do check your DVD player is 16:9 as most people still have them set at default which is either 4:3 or 4:3 letterbox.
