Advise on HD recording on new cameras

Hi,
Have spent a long time reading post on here before I purchase a new camera. Very torn at the moment between sony and canon. Looking at the Sony HDR SR11e. Daft question if i make a home movie with a high def camera can i still burn it onto a 4.7gd dvd and play it on a normal dvd player. if so how long a film can i get on to a disk. Do any of the high def cameras offer sd recording?
Regards

Not
You can arthor Hi def to DVD disc ( AVCHD disc) 20 min but it will only play as Hi def on PS3 and BD players . It wont play on a normal DVD player at all

The Sonys do , the Canons do not. Im not sure about the Panasonics
Why would you want to record SD anyway?

FWIW, jjsut for nifothe tape Hi def ( HDV ) all record Sd but even oif you record as SD you can capture as SD for the purposes of making a norml SD DVDS video whilst still retaining te Hi def footage on tape

Re: Advise on HD recording on new cameras

I want to future proof myself alittle. I make home movies for myself and family but no one other than me has a Blue Ray Player. I might be best to get a standard def camcorder for the moment. Shame i was liking the look of the Pano hdc sd9.
Many thanks for you help

Ive got the SD9 and i think its a great camcorder.

Unless yo want to save money, I would get a high def camcorder.

I cant answer your questions yet though, as Im new to this high def recording lark!

It's easy enough to "down convert" HD video to SD. I wouldn't let wanting to make SD DVDs put me off buying an HD camcorder. In fact I'm in precisely that boat myself.

Re: Advise on HD recording on new cameras

I have the Sony HVRSR10e. It love it.

Since getting it I bought a Sony PS3 (pre-owned) and I dont have to burn DVDs any more which I have done for years.

My whole SD and HD collection is on the PS3 (I upgraded the Hard Disc to 320Gb).

To share videos with friends I upload to www.vimeo.com in 720p HD which is better than SD DVD. Most people have a broadband Internet connection. The future is not in burning to BluRay format which is costly.

Regards.
