EZ Grabber USB Video Capture

Hi
I am looking to transfer some video tapes to dvd disc. I have been told the easiest way is to use one of these EZ Grabber USB Video Capture devices. These connect a VCR to a pc or laptop to enable the transfer.
However i have read on ohter forums that these devices and other similar simply do not work!
I would like to know if any AVF users have tried one of these or any other recommendations.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Regards
MJ

They do generally work but the quality is often underwhelming. I imagine they can get fiddly to work with some folk

There have been posts on it.. not usually giving it the

The general advice is to use a Settop DVD recorder
or
any of the Dazzle products ( Maplins/ PC world or Amazon)
or
Costlier but far better
THIS sort of thing

Re: EZ Grabber USB Video Capture

Hello everyone. Post #1 from me, and I hope it's in the right place. I have successfully used Pinnacle Studio 9 in the past, in conjunction with the Moviebox, for transferring my 8mm video tapes to my PC for subsequent editing/soundtracks etc and then burning to DVD. After a gap of a couple of years ( including relocation from Ireland to Spain) I decided to finish off the work that I had started years ago. I upgraded to Pinnacle Studio 12. I set everything up as usual, but unfortunately despite re-loading drivers etc I cannot get the Moviebox to operate; ( Cannot start device - Code 10). It hasn't been manhandled to the best of my knowledge. I've tried posting on the Pinnacle forum itself - but I think I'm looking at replacing the device. It would appear however, that the current Moviebox devices come bundled with software. I understandably don't need to pay for any further software. Does anyone know if the new Moviebox can be purchased separately? Is there an alternative video capture device available which will do the same thing and which is compatible with Pinnacle Studio 12 - such as e.g.the eponymous EZ Grabber Video Capture Device?
All subsequent video footage will be shot on a new camcorder - which one ... this I am still currently researching. But I think I'll stick with MiniDV for the moment - so long as I can edit on my PC using already purchased software.

The software is a cut down version of Pinnacle Studio.Installing it may well make Pinnacle 12 see it. Pinnacle Studio decided to use Liquids " engine" from ver 10 onwards, that may account for the older box not being "seen" but it may be also that there is a workabout.
I also have movie box ( from ver 9 but the much better Pro BOB from Avid Liquid 7 ( which Avid is no longer developing, sadly , having bought it off Pinnacle)

Saying that you can have vers 9 ( and 12) both on the same system: capture with 9 ( and edit with 12) with your current moviebox

I dont think so, ordinarily but it is probably the case it would cost as much anyway

THIS product from Canopus is costlier but far better IMHO
Im pretty sure EZ grabber will convert to mpeg2 " on the fly". Will it do it well?..probably not but YMMV

Re: EZ Grabber USB Video Capture

Thank you for that, Senu.
The error is being generated by my Device Manager. So neither 9 nor 12 can use my Moviebox at this time. The error typically indicates a driver problem - but I've addressed that issue by installing/re-installing. I may just have to bite the bullet and replace it. I still have plenty of tape to process yet, so I need a Video Capture Device.
So much for procrastination!

Re: EZ Grabber USB Video Capture

Beware!
I recently purchased EZ Grabber after it was recommended by'The Gadget Show' on Channel 5, to work with my Windows Vista set-up. On installation of its DirectX driver I received the message 'This version of DirectX is not compatible with the version of Windows currently installed'.
On the packaging it states 'Certified for Windows Vista'.
Anybody out there help me?

Unhappy Re: EZ Grabber USB Video Capture

Sorry I can't answer your question, but I have also just installed EZ Grabber.
The problem my signal is PAL-L but I don't get this option on the Setup drop sceen only PAL_M, _N or _BDHIG?
I see the controller on my laptop screen, but the picture screen above it is just black. When I press record the timer starts to show it's recording, but still blank screen.
Anybody advise?
