Panasonic Vs JVC Newbie help required

I am totally new to Camcorders but after a bit of research have shortlisted two. I only want it for filming holidays, new baby etc. But I will also need to take digital stills to email. My shortlist is:

Panasonic NV GS30b
JVC GR D70

Both are similarly priced, both have DVin and out and both have the ability to take stills. THe Panasonic has the edge with progressive stills but the JVC has the edge with a higher res for stills. It is important that the camera I choose can take digital stills but only to store on computer not bothered about printing out. Other than that they seem to be pretty similarly specced.

Anyone any advice? It seems that a few people on here dislike Panasonics! Why is this?

Thanks: Gave 83, Got 89
Get the JVC with higher res stills. Asides from that both machines would service your needs admirably.
