Thanks: Gave 4, Got 1 | editing from mini dv to usb
Hi I have a Sony PC350 Camcorder that connects using a firewire cable.
The problem that I have is that I will be changing my laptop to a Mac and the connections are only USB - Is there a way to transfer the mini DV tapes
using USB instead of Firewire or is there a way to convert mini DV that has been put onto a DVD into a Mac and then edit it in the mac.
Sorry I know these might be silly questions,

No ( to the first question)
However there are USB devices which can take the analogue signal and digitise it before transferring to the PC . They generally degrade the video
MiniDV to DVD: If you mean can you edit off DVD video footage: That is mpeg2 and should easily be possible. Certainly it is with the PC

I have breakout box ( AVID liquid 7 Pr BOB) which can take USB2 to PC on one end but has a variety of inputs including firewire but it is more of the exception than the rule.
Avid are not developing it and it isn not mac friendly anyhow

Send an email to sjobs@apple.com and let him know how joyful life is now that firewire's gone from the macbook.

I've seen devices that claim to provide firewire connections for laptops without them. Do these retain qulaity? How do they work, and why not on a Mac?

They work very well but Im not sure that macs have PCMCIA interfaces or PC Express.
Some more recent ( budget) Laptops do not have firewire and dont have these interfaces too

The MacBook is (at present) the only Mac without FireWire, and it doesn't have Express card slots either.

Hi,
Just read your thread, I just bought a lead that is firewire one end and usb the other, it was from a company called cablestar. Cannot vouch for it to do the job though as I have my own problems(check out my thread)
