Interlacing Issue???

Hi

I have a panasonic mini dv camera which i have used for a few years and use adobe premiere for editing. i have also recently bought a Sony DCR-SR55 hard drive camera just for quickness and convenience in certain situations.

when I play the mpg files from the Sony camera the image is plagued by horizontal lines when there is a lot of movement - (funnily it seems a lot less when played back on my laptop rather than my desktop). i believe this is called interlacing - i have searched on the internet and have a vague understanding about it but how do I get rid of it - surely the mpg files should just play normally on the computer!! Excuse my ignorance, but could someone please enlighten me!!! i understand the lines will disappear on tv playback but i watch a lot of the movies on computer too and am finding it very annoying!

thanks

Re: Interlacing Issue???

It's totally independent of the file format, mpeg or otherwise. Television broadcast uses a form of mpeg compression, but the video is still interlaced.

Somewhere in Premiere's output settings there'll be an option for deinterlacing your video. Select the deinterlacing option whenever your video is destined for viewing on LCD computer monitors, whether you're own or on the web.

Andrew.

Re: Interlacing Issue???

ive seen the option in premiere to deinterlace - but how come some mpegs do it and others don't

for example, why does a dvd look fine on computer or tv? i just dont get why the recording on a digital camcorder can look so bad on a computer!!

also, what do you mean it is independent of the file format?? - you mean any video file format can be interlaced???

cheers

Re: Interlacing Issue???

I'm not entirely sure. It's not a resolution issue, as DVDs are (only) standard definition. Anyone else?

I mean it's to do with how your source video is created (whether it was shot interlaced or progressive), not what kind of file format you choose for the end result.

Surely you jest. I see it all the time!

Would you care to provide links to your youtube clips?

lol - just had a quick look at this and quality is so poor compared to original you probably can't tell if its interlacing or not! probably dropped myself in it now! interestingly, i just read that youtube 'attempts' to deinterlace videos itself. also i'm guessing a lot of cheaper cameras people use are progressive.

cheers
