Storing High Def recordings.

Dont know if this should be posted on the PS3 section?

I know that if I copy my high-def recordings from my SDHC cards onto my PS3 hard drive, I can then reuse the same card over and over.

However, in years to come I may want to transfer the recordings from the PS3 to whatever suitable media is available (i.e recordable blu-ray discs).

Anyone know if they can be lifted off a PS3 if needed?
Im using a Panasonic SD9.

You can copy files back to your Memory Card or a USB external HDD, the latter would be best for archive purposes.

Thats odd! my PS3 will not let me store AVCHD files on the hard drive, only SD, there is no option for storing HD?
This is straight from my Sony HD camcorder, which allows playback of AVCHD.

I stream my avchd files to ps3, and can copy to hard drive and are stored as avc. The quality is great.

Re: Storing High Def recordings.

Care to elaborate? do you mean you can transfer via modem? or some other way, sorry not to up on all this yet, if i plug my camcorder into PS3 via USB there is no option to save/copy to the hard drive.

Re: Storing High Def recordings.

I have a wired network so my computer can see the ps3, and use tversity so i can see and play or save to my ps3 hard drive .you could also put the memory stick straight into the ps3 and play from that. Ps3 reads m2ts files .

Re: Storing High Def recordings.

The reason your PS3 cannot play the files is the USB link, if the memory card was plugged into a PS3 (obviously an old 60GB version) then they would play perfectly and let you copy to HDD, if they were stored on a computer they would play across the wired (or wireless if fast enough) network. The camera MIGHT have a mode which allows it to act as a USB device but the connection may not be fast enough even then (it won't be full USB2 speed).

Re: Storing High Def recordings.

Currently Im putting the SD card into my PS3 and copying it over to the PS3 hard drive.

If I keep doing this I will end up needing a bigger hard drive in the PS3, but will this keep it high-def??.

Or I could buy the Panasonic VW-BN1 burner and copy to DVD, I think this keeps it as high-def.

Or just keep buying new SDHC cards all the time (which could work out expensive).

Either way, I want to preserve the high-def picture quality for future use.

Yes but you can just as easily do this via a PC and get a 750Gb Ext USB HDD for £60

You can Easily use a PC DVD drive and save money on the VW_BN1
To keep it as Hi def just
  • burn a data disc
or
  • create an "AVCHD disc" for Hi def Playback
But for for archiving.. Data should be fine

You will The files dont become SD just because you burn them to a DVD disc. Only if you specify creation of an SD DVD video will that happen
The PS3s HDD is not really an ideal store
Also If you do have an Externa HDD formatted as FAT32 , you can hook it up to the PS3 and play back Hi def files pn it as you would from am SD card

Theres some good 'food for thought' there, thanks.

Not sure if my laptop is powerful enough to cope with all the demands of editing software etc, which is why Im considering putting a bigger hard drive in my PS3.

I will give all options some thought.

Cheers for the advice everyone.

The only things my PS3 will recognise when connected via USB is the controller and my Sony HD camcorder, it will not see a 8gig usb stick?

Does your PS3 not have an SD card port in the lift up flap (above the USB ports)?

If your camcorder records to SD cards then you can use this.

My PS3 works with my 32GB USB Stick and 500GB Ext HDD. Is your USB stick formatted FAT32?

Re: Storing High Def recordings.

Firmware upgrade?

Anyway the fact of your laptop not being powerful for editing and perhaps not brilliant for playback does not mean you still cant store your HD clips on an HDD via the laptop ( or a desktop) rather than try to expand your PS3

You can actually still play clips stored on the said HDD connected to your laptop , if you can stream them to the PS3 using the laptop as a media server and the PS3 in streamer mode
This requires a little know-how but it is do able if you are determined

Re: Storing High Def recordings.

Well sorted out streaming to the PS3, but its pretty slow, and doesn't seem to see any AVCHD/H.264/M2TS content despite having the codecs enabled, using TVersity, so i suspect HD would be a lot slower, guess its back to the WD TV idea.

Re: Storing High Def recordings.

Slow even for content stored on your own PCs HDD?
I take it this is wired streaming? not wireless
I guess you will find a solution..

Re: Storing High Def recordings.

No, wireless at the moment so expected, but not to be that slow? will get an Ethernet cable sorted, further to my experiments with my PS3 not reading the 8gig USB stick, i have tried re formatting three different ways and all it does is say the is an unrecognised USB device connected, but wont show it on the menu? yet i can connect my Fuji camera, and also my Nokia phone, very strange.
Maybe i should link this to the PS3 section.

Sorry, I cant help with the USB stick issue as ive never used one yet.

I didnt realise the newer models dont have an SD slot. Is this the case for all PS3's purchased nowadays?
