re: MiniDV or SD card camera?

Had a mini DV until recently - gave it to friends abroad.
Now have tapes but no machine to play them on.

I think that miniDV cameras are on their way out but cannot find one for under about £90 - too much to spend on kit that will soon be obsolete.

Would like to have tapes transfered to PC/DVD and then would buy SD recorder with optical zoom.

I wouldnt be too sure about that. its been "on its way out" for a long time
It has a wide user base and £150 is not IMHO too much to send given that for sheer quality no SD card camcorder can touch them be it the mpeg2 models or H.264. Im sure a decent second and model can be had for £90 though.. It might cost you more to actually have the tapes transferred to PC /DVD if you can get to borrow one
There is no denying the inconvenience of real time transfer and the fact of fewer models but they are not antiques yet and many semi pro models ( SD ) or HDV still use MiniDV tapes

They exist but a good model would set you back more than a few hundred pounds

I dont think tape will last for ever but " will soon be obsolete" isnt quite accurate

,
No but even when they do bundle software is gennerally underwhelming
