Sony HDR-SR10E headphone/mic sockets - lack thereof

Having received a shiny new Sony SR10 camcorder from Santa ... I have discovered no external headphone socket so that I can monitor sound when recording.

Also, there is no microphone socket to connect, for example, a lapel mic.

Is there a way round this? I thought of either:
- some sort of Sony accessory to plug into the 'Active Interface Shoe' on the top to provide a mic socket? Can't find one on the Sony Style website though...
- either a breakout box to plug into the a/v connector directly, or a small box to convert the audio line out to headphone out?

Anyone also frustrated but found a solution?

Haymee

you can get adaptors like this from amazon and keene electrics, the lack of a headphone socket may be more difficult.

Your best option for headphones would be to use the AV output. It's possible to find RCA-to-minijack adaptors, but it's hardly an elegant solution.

Andrew.

Re: Sony HDR-SR10E headphone/mic sockets - lack thereof

Thank you for the link Chris.

However this item just physically turns the AIS shoe into a cold shoe to fix another accessory to the top of the camcorder.

What I really need is some sort of magic box (it would probably have to be made by Sony...) that slides into the AIS and give me a stereo 3.5mm (or XLR) mic socket.

The headphone part of my problem is I suspect more easily solved, with some sort of small battery-powered box with stereo Line In on one side and Headphone Out (with volume control) on the other.

Not sure this will ever happen, since AIS is Sony's property and I imagine they guard it jealously and would mobilise against anyone trying to muscle in on their accessories market.

Sony did indeed make just such an adaptor box some years ago. Unfortunately, it is no longer available.

Re: Sony HDR-SR10E headphone/mic sockets - lack thereof

Thanks guys, I'm going to e-mail Sony and see if they can answer my query. If they respond with anything vaguely sensible I'll post it in this thread.

In the meantime any other solutions or thoughts gratefully received!

Hey there is a way to get a mic input. This is only because they discontinued the VMC-K100, which added a 2.5mm input for AIS. This is a hardware hack, so find a cheap AIS mic. I used the ECM-HGZ1 for this hack. You open the casing and take out microphone. Then you find a 2.5mm input at radioshack and cut a hole in the side of the casing for the input hole to fit snuggly. solder the two red and black wires to the prongs on the input and put it back together.

Here is picture and further directions:
