Mic problem with Canon MD235

Hello,
I recently bought this camcorder (Canon MD235). Practically, this is my first camcorder and I chose it by reading various comments on this forum. I'm quite satisfied with the overall quality, it's really useful during holidays.
I'd like to use it also to make some (very, very xD) low-budget movies with my friends, so I was looking for a mic (given that the cam has that kind of input).
Today I tried to connect a microphone I usually use on the PC, but all I got as sound was an annoying costant noise, no voice. I also tried with the 12bit mode, but it only changed frequency xD.
Is there some kind of special mic that I have use, or it's a problem of my cam?
Maybe, it's because it was the microphone from a "voip kit"? (I mean, there were also headphones attached with the mic).

Thanks for help and happy holidays!

P.S.: Sorry for any language mistake, I'm from Italy, I hope I used a decent english! xD

Re: Mic problem with Canon MD235

Great to hear you're branching out and experimenting with your new camcorder! Any self-powered condensor microphone with a standard 3.5mm plug should work. Self-powered means the microphone will have a battery inside it (usually a AA in a small mic or, in a larger mic, a 9-volt).

Here are links to a couple of examples:

Sony ECM-MS907
RØDE VideoMic
