Being Sold Display/Returned Equipment in a Shop...

I had some family pick up my Canon HG10 from Jacobs about a week ago, and opened it all up yesterday. The store it was collected from had to get it ordered in from elsewhere in the company as they were out of stock.

I noticed that the box had been opened before - the selotape seals had been cut. When I finally got the camcorder charged up, I noticed that there was already a video stored on it. It is a 15 second long video taken by what sounds like a staff member stood behind the counter. There was no date set on the video, but when I checked it on my computer and zoomed in on their computerised counter, the date appears to have been Februrary 2008.

I am now unsure whether I have been given a display item that has been tested by the public for the last 10 months, or even whether it has been returned by somebody - perhaps more than once. This is why I don't like being sold opened stock, because ultimately you can never know what has happened to it. If I am given something sealed in the box, I know it hasn't been touched since leaving the factory.

I have also noticed a very minor blemish on the exterior, a scratch on one of the corners. This might have been done by me, I can't be certain, but I don't think so.

So would other people be bothered by this? Should I contact the store and demand a new one that has been completely unopened? Or should I stop acting like a neurotic t*t?

The camcorder basically seems to be in excellent condition and is working absolutely fine. It may just be that the staff in the store were testing it, or maybe it was used to demonstrate to the public. How would other people treat this? I sort of expect expensive stuff like this to be sold to me completely new and sealed in the box - if I go into a store and it is the last one and it has been on display I expect them to tell me this and I can decide whether I want to accept it. But in this case, it seems very cheeky that they have sent me a used item without even checking it is ok. Is this normal for shops like Jacobs!?

Cheers

I totally understand how you feel about this and think that taking it back, explaining the situation, and asking for a new replacement HG10 would be perfectly justified.

Andrew.

Andrew,

Thanks for that response. I wasn't sure whether I was being completely unreasonable. I can certainly live with having to keep it, but I think as a matter of principle I am going to contact them tomorrow and ask for a new one. I'll feel a lot happier, especially from a warranty point of view, getting something brand new. I also think they should have asked me; the store that sent it out were out of order really. I don't blame the store that ordered it for me.

i would ask for a new one, there`s nothing i hate worse than buying something and finding that it`s been opened. you are paying for a new machine and thats what you should get.

Unless you bought the camera as a specifically identified individual model or unless you bought it on an "as seen" basis, this is mis-selling by the supplier who must surely be in breach of the Sale of Good Act. Any doubts can be resolved by the Office of Fair Trading.
