Unhappy Help for Panasonic SD9/HS9

Hi folks,
I wondered if somone could answer a query I have with my HS9 camcorder. It records in 1080P ??
If so then why does my Panasonic PZ81B TV switch to 1080i when I view my footage on the camcorder with a HDMI cable?? My TV is the freesat model and can display multi resolutions so know its not at fault. Is there some sort of setting/adjustment I need to make to view it on my tv as a 1080p picture??
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: Help for Panasonic SD9/HS9

The HS9 records 1080i, not 1080p.

Re: Help for Panasonic SD9/HS9

This is true. However, it's "progressive" video that comes in a 50i (or 60i, depending on your flavour - or is that flavor?) wrapper.

So theres no way of viewing it directly from the camera in 1080p??
The labels all say full 1080p cancorder - could this be a case of panasonic selling a product which does'nt do what it says on the can???

Re: Help for Panasonic SD9/HS9

Andrew perhaps you might be able to explain how a camcorder records as interlaced but is said to have a progressive output

Also the implication for this during editing. and the value of ouputing as interlaced, not progresive
Leaving any final deinterlacing to the Display
I think I have a fair idea myself but I think that marketing forces have jumped onto the "full HD" bandwagon to convince buyer that nothing less than a "full HD" camcorder is worth its money

To the OP ; FWIW I have 2 HDV camcorders which record in 1080i.. excellent playback on HDTV

Also I tried playing I-Robot bluray disc on a 1080p TV last night . I forced 720p, 1080i and 1080p output from the BD player.
Then watched the SD DVD upscaled to 1080i..

The differences subjectively were far less than I expected but Im sure you may have found
that out yourself using the Denon and PS3 as you do

Re: Help for Panasonic SD9/HS9

Well, I'm not entirely sure how it works with the SD9, I'm just fairly certain that it's not "true" progressive. The SD9 specifications suggest this too, listing "1080/50i" as the signal system - no mention of progressive output there. The only time 25p is actually mentioned in the specs is under "Picture Size" where it simply states that 25p is recorded at 1920x1080.

I suppose one thing I would ask the OP is whether 1920x1080p25 is supported by the PZ81B, according to its own spec sheet - and also whether the clips being tested were definitely recorded using the 25p menu setting.

Andrew.

Re: Help for Panasonic SD9/HS9

This from the PZ81B spec sheet:
Quote:
HDMI Input 1080p: n/a
So it's possible your set doesn't support progressive video across HDMI.

It's a moot point, really, given that it will handle interlaced video, which is better at handling movement than the breed of "progressive" recorded on consumer level camcorders anyway.

EDIT: Looking at page 58 of the PZ81B manual, under "Technical Information" (see attached image), the only HDMI-supported progressive signals listed are 50p, 60p, and 24p. So if you have the US version of the HS9, which records 24p, then it's supported. The UK version of the HS9 has a 25p progressive mode, which according to the table on page 58, isn't supported. The HS9 doesn't shoot 50p or 60p (and in fact nothing does except professional broadcast cameras - and not even all of them).
