DVDR with 1280x720 video for BluRay player.

Is this possible?
I have just purchased an SD card HD pocket camcorder (Traveller DV5000 from Aldi - £58 No seriously - I still have a Hi8 from 16 years ago but don't want to use it too often and comparable camcorders today are almost as bulky).

Anyway with the free software tools I have I can convert the footage (H.264 AVI 1280x720) to SD widescreen/letterbox, fine for a normal DVD player.

I am just wondering if there's any software (free) that will write to DVD+-R (all my PC can do) with HD footage - only short running time of course - that will playback in a BluRay machine ?

Re: DVDR with 1280x720 video for BluRay player.

I've seen a walkthrough (on VideoHelp I believe) for creating what I seek, except that was for playback in the now obsolete HD-DVD players. All I wish for is to be able to record my digital camera HD footage to DVDR, in a format that will enable HD playback in a BluRay player, preferably using freeware.
As said in previous post, I have already converted the footage to SD for playback in conventional DVD players, but the only way to achieve HD is involving a PC (monitor) or the camera (HDMI to HDTV) at playback time, the latter obviously requiring the file to be on SD card and in the camera.

What you seek to create is called an AVCHD disc; A Blu ray struture on DVD meda playable on the PS3 or certain BD players

I dont imagine free can do it ATM ,

What you need is any of
Nero viso 5/6 ( from Nero8/9)
Ulead VS 11.5 Corel X2
Ulead movie Factory 6 + ( With HD add on pack)
Pinnacle Studio 12 ( hard to endorse as it is not wel benhave on all sysytems but when it works it works well)

These cost more than the camcorder itself
The other potential problem is codec compatibitlity with your camcorders output fil
Lastly. i assure you that no current consumer camcorder is anywhere as big as a Hi 8 from 16 years ago. They are all a fraction of its size.Anything as big probably uses tape and is a Semi Pro
If your Hi 8 was "semi Pro , even those these days are actually small for what they pack in

Thank you. Now I know what to look out for maybe on trial/giveaway/Linux application specs.

In-PC conversion is not a problem - that can handle custom resolutions.

Yes I had two camcorders - full-size S-VHS (JVC GF-S1000) and an early Sony Hi8 (mono CRT viewfinder!). Just looking at DVD/HDD camcorders at £150+ those might be smaller, but are no more portable or convenient than the Hi8. I'm just keeping it now for playback/transfer of existing tapes.
The HD digital camera being of "fag-packet" format is portable and will therefore be available for ad-hoc use.
