Samsung MX20 or Canon FS100 for MacBook Pro

I'm looking at a camcorder for family use, we have a MacBook Pro as our main computer so need to be able to link to that. These 2 seem to be the best in our price range according to the advice I have searched on this site!

I cannot find many retailers for the Samsung & the best price I can find is £156.59 from Comet, the Canon I can get for £172.59 from jessops with their current 10% off deal & a canon cashback......any advice on which to go to???

Also, I am after advice n how big to go for a mem card - 8 or 16gb...also good places to get them..play.com??

Any advice gratefully received :-))

Re: Samsung MX20 or Canon FS100 for MacBook Pro

Read the review of the Samsung in the sticky, and then the thread about the FS100
Both will work with the mac but Im not sure about editing H.264 that the Samsung uses whereas the FS100 uses mpeg2 which I believe imovie can easily handle, even if Canons software is no good
If you want a very short MX20 footage let me know
Someone linked a Makro deal for the MX20 ( £ 99 ex vat) but if the Canon is close in price it may well represent better VFM

Re: Samsung MX20 or Canon FS100 for MacBook Pro

Both should work fine with iMovie '08 so long as you've updated it to the latest version (7.1.4).

Here's a list of camcorders presently supported by iMovie: iMovie ’08: Camcorder Support. The Samsung involves a little extra pfaffing about (see iMovie '08: Samsung SC-MX20 camcorders) whereas the Canon should be pretty much a plug-n-play kinda deal.

Andrew.

Thanks guys, especially Andrew for the link to Apple as I thought from other posts that it might not be comptible...which now makes it even harder to decide which of the two to go for!

Andrew.
What I just found is that the mp4 video from the MX20 I import, comes out as deinterlaced
Not sure what to do.
Also the widescreen I record is squashed to 4:3 ratio.

Some site reccomended this: Download JES Deinterlacer for Mac - QuickTime deinterlacer. MacUpdate Mac Video Software Downloads
But not too sure what to do.

Thanks
