Re: NEW : Sony HDR-TG3/TG1 - New Smallest 1080i camcorder Pt 2

Here is some test shots using Sony's VCL-HGE07TB wide angle lens cap, which is supposed to work with it's new HD camcorder Sony HDR-TG7. This was filmed on a TG3E, lens a bit tight going on, but made of soft, flexible plastic (non-brittle). Works a treat! Wide angle soloution for all TG3 owners!

Let me know if you have any questions.

Interesting! Any noticebly difference in th filming quality? And what is on the shelf behind you ?

Different question. Anyone got a good solution to a wind sock? The mic picks up everything making a normal wind sound like a hurricane .

I usually use (a friend showed me) a small cotton wool ball attached to mic by an elastic band, very un-elegant, but cuts wind noise by 50% plus you can rip it off in a second, should anyone cool come sauntering by. You can buy little fake fur sticky things, but they have to stay on permanently-rubbish. Camcorder ends up looking like Bert from Sesame Street.

No difference in film quality with lens on, as sharp as ever. It wont focus if you over zoom, but that's normal, it is for wide angles after all.

The little men on shelf are "Qee"...more addictive than crack-try not to go there: ::: Toy2r.com :::

does the camera still close with the converter still connected? ie the lens protector still closes fine when you switch off?

Hahah, no worries. I PM'd you because i remember you were interested and this thread is HUGE. Thought my post might get lost.
Yeah, camera acts independently of lens. The black shutter, still closes when viewing panel is put down or switched off. It took so long for me to get back to you all because Sony mucked up order and it went AWOL. As i said in earlier post, it was cheaper by ordering off the telephone number, but only by about £10.

Lens goes on real easy now-it's a bit of a tug to get off i guess as camera it's meant for is 2 mm smaller, best to use both hands with camera gripped between thighs.......that sounds wrong....
Anyway, PM me back when you get yours and tell me what you think or i can easily do some other side by side shots on youtube if you want before you take the plunge, but its very good you won't regret it.
The crumbled couch shot indoors says it all for me. I can actually film people in a room now without having to pan left right up down and shake it all around.

Cos.

Apart from needing to use the full zoom range can you imagine needing to take it off ? I'm sooo tempted, but don't fancy pulling the top of the camera off trying to get the lens off :-)

And excellent example shots.

Cheers,

Yes was tempted to keep lens on, but the camcorder then doesn't fit in the nice official carry case. Even though the lens comes with a nice zip up pouch-there is no lens cap as such to protect the glass of the lens that i can put on once attached....Like i said, it goes on easy, but taking it off you have to be more careful.

Thanks for posting such a great video of TG3 with Lens. Do you think that the lens could potentially scratch the TG3 if you put it on and take it off too many times over a period of time. Please advise. Cheers..

No, it's softish plastic, hasn't scratched mine. My only worry would be tugging too hard/incorrectly and ripping the top of camera off-highly unlikely i'm sure, but i have wrestled to get it off a couple of times. I haven't used it since it came. Let me try again when I get home tonight and will post back if still hard to get off or whether it was my technique

ps feel free to give me thanks if you liked the video ;-)

Plastic has softned. Easy to get on and off. Go for it.

Wide-angle lens for TG3E

Has anyone looked into this 3rd party wide-angle adapter; it is a third of the price of the official Sony one?

Read this 1st:
Sony HDR-TG3 with a Wide Angle Lens « TECHMOAN: Gadgets, Tech and General Moaning
You have to glue two rings to your flash ring around your lens (rendering flash unusable-not that i use the camera that much for taking stills, but I still don't want glue there), plus it has to be attached really carefully and bizarrely, slightly off centre as you get "vinyetting" effect, black unsightly borders when you film. Plus it's attached by a flimsy magnet-won't stay on very well.
I did consider it at first, but any of the above was enough to put me off.

I'm thinking plastic vs. titanium = no scratches.

Re: NEW : Sony HDR-TG3/TG1 editing software

Could someone please tell if it is possible to add effects, like fading in and out etc, with the software provided.
