Any experiences of The Digital Camera Co returns?

I'm suffering severe dropouts on my Canon HV30 and I'm considering sending it in to be looked at. I bought the camera from The Digital Camera Co in April '08 and wondered if anyone had any experiences of their return procedures/service?

I guess I could go direct to Canon, but I'd prefer to keep the retailer in the loop in case there's any future claims for costs, etc.

I emailed Canon directly reporting my problems and they replied with a 'cut & paste' answer directing me to their service centres. None anywhere near me do HD.

The cam is guaranteed so digital camera co are obliged to get it repaired.

Indeed. But what retailers are obliged to do and what they actually do are sometimes two totally different things. Sometimes better service can be obtained by going direct to the manufacturer.

Re: Any experiences of The Digital Camera Co returns?

I submitted a return with The Digital Camera Company and they have replied thus:

Quote:
Good morning,

The information you have given indicates that this item was not actually purchased for us but from a now ceased trading company that was called the "The Digital Camera Company" they had an address on the Isle of Man but there has never been any connection with us at all apart from the similar name we now use as we acquired the internet domain name shortly after it ceased trading and their website was closed down.

Sorry we are unable to help you on this occasion.

Regards

Camerabox Ltd.
To be honest, I'm at a loss.

When I bought the camcorder they had a sale on due to redesigning their website or some other reason. There was no mention of them closing down. The website change very slightly, but you would think it was the same company (same logo, domain name, similar style website, etc) but now they're a totally different company?

Their website says it was established in 2004, but I only bought the camcorder in April this year.

Digital Cameras - About Us

I don't really know what to do next.

Fantastic! So much for a 2 year warranty. So much for a 1 year warranty.

I guess the only thing I can do now is go direct through Canon.

I remembered there was a thread on here.

Re: Any experiences of The Digital Camera Co returns?

I've contacted Canon and they will take a look at it. I have to post it (at my expense) and there is a 7 working day turnaround. So no way I'd have it back by Christmas.

I'm paranoid now that Canon will try and say it's wear & tear, or user error, or accidental damage and get out of fixing it (without charging me a fortune).
