Re: Sony DCR-TRV series comparison
Which of them would be better or at least newer?
What would you choose between trv355E and trv460E?
Thanks

Re: Sony DCR-TRV series comparison
The DCR-TRV355E is a 2003 model, DCR-TRV460E is 2004. Assuming both machines are working correctly there will be no difference in playback quality between the two.

Re: Sony DCR-TRV series comparison
And what about recording? I found this differences in a page in Internet. Are they correct? I have the opportunity of buying one of this two cameras. TRV355E is a little more expensive than TRV460E but seems to have superior resolution. Is the difference in prize worth the differences between TRV355E and TRV460E, or the TRV460E is even better than TRV355E?
TRV355E:
800,000 Gross Pixels (400,000 for video).
SuperSteadyShot
Controls on the Camera Body
Mic/Lanc Input
Ok Low Light Performance
AV In/Out
S-Video In/Out
DV In/Out
USB Out
Colour Slow Shutter/Super NightShot etc
Frame by Frame Advance. . ..
TRV460E:
540,000 Gross Pixels (350,000 for Video)
Electronic Steady Shot
Controls in Touch Screen Menus
No Mic or Lanc Input
No Super NightShot
No AV In
AV Out
S-Video In/Out
DV In
Thanks for your help

Re: Sony DCR-TRV series comparison
I have just bought a second hand (obviously, it's too old) Sony DCR-TRV310E càmera in order to transfer my old Hi8 and 8mm videotapes to my pc. The càmera is in the list above but I don't know if can actually do the job because i the drivers/compatibility list in the Sony page don't appear this camera. Neither in the compatible list nor in the incompatible one. And in the instructions of the càmera, downloaded from the same page, you can read:
CONNECTION TO YOUR PC
- When inputting the image recorded by Hi8/standard8 (analog) system into your PC, dub the image into a Digital8 or DV tape first, and then input it into your PC.
And that's all. Do you think I was wrong buying this camera or I could transfer my old videotapes directly to my PC? What can I do? I just bought this very old camera for this reason.
Thanks.

Re: Sony DCR-TRV series comparison
According to page 83 of the DCR-TRV310E user manual, downloadable here:-
http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/3865973141.pdf
Quote
"The Digital8 system or Hi8/standard 8 system is automatically detected before the tape is played back.*
* During playback of tapes recorded in the Hi8/standard 8 system, digital signals are output as the image signals from the DV OUT
jack."
End quote
The model list I posted above is based on my own notes gathered over the last ten years or so and proofed (before posting) against the customer instruction books available through the Sony website & other sources.

Re: Sony DCR-TRV series comparison
If connecting the cam to PC via firewire then you can't output the time & date on the video that is captured. To do this you need to use a separate bit of software to pull the info from the metadata transfered with the video file. Time & date are only output over the analogue connections. There are a few options mentioned in This old thread.
Mark.
