Transferring miniDV from Canon HV20 to HD DVD

I have the Canon HV20 Mini DV/HDV camcorder and want to just copy the video onto Hi-Def DVDs (no editing at all). It looks like stand-alone Blu-Ray DVD recorders are not available or too pricey. What would I need in terms of hardware and software (I scraped the following from a 2007 PC mag article):

1) >= Intel Core 2 Duoprocessor
2) graphic card w/ 256MB of memory and dual DVI output (do I need to consider these things if I'm not doing ANY editing?)
3) Software Editing: Adobe Premiere Elements (Do I need this software if I'm just looking to capture the video without editing? What software should I use?)
4) Firewire cable and Firewire card
5) DVD Authoring s/w: which is best? Sonic DVDit Pro HD, Pinnacle Studio 11.0? Should I pick one that supports burning HD DVDs using a non-HD writer?
6) Panasonic SW-5582 Blu-Ray burner (or is there a better one? or should I just use a DVD authoring s/w product that will burn Hi-Def DVDs using a non-HD writer?)
7) What discs are best -- Verbatim and Ridata BD-Rs?

Other questions:
1) Once I grab the HDV video from my Canon onto my computer, what format is it in?
2) Is there any loss of quality going from the HDV tape to the format on the computer?
3) Is there any loss of quality when it authors it onto a HD DVD in BluRay format?

Thanks,
Bill

When i make my blu ray discs from hdv tapes i use my vaio laptop with its built in software[click to dvd bd]i have also used my main pc and pinnacle 12 ultimate software, i have a blu ray burner with the pc but using this method i can not make separate menus like with the vaio so it is a question of copying 2 edited hdv tapes which must also be done with the laptop and its software via pinnacle and rendering and burning, there is no quality loss ps3s and most blu ray players will play these discs. My fitted bd burner to the main pc is an lg which works fine.I have found -R discs give more recording time than +R and verbatim are fine. The trouble with pinnacle the editing is ok but the bd disc will be one long recording of the films you edit so you can not skip to which film is wanted on the disc, hdv on dvd blank discs are avchd ,pinnacle will allow35 minutes of film on a standard disc.

Re: Transferring miniDV from Canon HV20 to HD DVD

HI Bill,

I have the HV20 also, what a piece of kit!

Right if you buy Adobe Premiere Elements that will let you rip the footage straight from the HV20 without any loss at all into mt2 OR m2t ( sorry i cant remember which way round it is but that doesnt matter) High Definition ..
Also the other good thing about Adobe Premiere Elements it has some DVD authouring in with the program all beit somewhat basic.

If you look at the latest version of Nero that wil let you rip, edit and create BD. You can even burn HD footage to a normal DVD then play it in say a ps3 and bobs ur uncle "Full HD"!!!!.

Adobe Premiere Elements 3 was that good i went balls out and bought Adobe Premiere CS3 which includes encore DVD authouring (very nice stuff).

I hope this helps you a little.

The files are Mpeg2 transport streams m2t
Premiere Elements will let you capture from HDv tape ( ver 3 and above) to PC. You can also do that with any software which supports HDV as long as you have a firewire enabled PC

The latter versions 3 and above are less basic in that

There are 4 ways you can get to watch HD off the camcorder
  • You can create HD DVD onto DVD discs but can only play these on an HD DVD player .. Toshiba stopped making them. The other problem was thsat HD DVD playere didn llike 50i (Pal land) footage
  • You can make a data DVD withthe files .. Only the PS3 can play these .. as a media player
  • You can Arthur AVCHD discs: These are specially arthored DVD dics with a Blu rsa y srture palayable on the PS3 , Most sotware Hi def playera off the PC or some ( but not all) Blu Ray players
  • Or
  • Create Bluray disc withthe appopriate burner, media and softwareThe Blu ray specification supports mpeg2 1080i
Nero version 8 and 9 as well as Ulead VS 11.5 X2, Pinnacle 12 and Ulead Movie Factory 6+ amongst others are all capable of getting these results

CS3 is a bit OTT IMHO ( unless you need it for other things) but if you like it , fine. It is PC resource heavy , has a more steep learning curve than element and is much costlier
The Ulead Porducts, Sony Vegas Movie Studio ( Or Pro) and Pinnacle are more affordable, Easy to use and give great results
I actually have all of them including the CS 3 and now 4 but usually use the easiest for the job

but as i said pinnacle 12 will make blu ray discs fine with a bd burner but unless i am missing something not one like click to dvd bd on sony vaio which allows all captured video to be split into the separate films individualy titled a chosen part of each film can be played on the title,so if for instance there are 10 films on the bd disc when it is inserted in the player all the fims show up on the screen playing a small part and the chosen film can be played.By the way senu i have my HC1 back its fine but the gv d300 came back and it still will not record or playback watchable recordings, the firm said it was fine but i think they just put cleaning tape through, its gone back again.

Unfortunately Sony doesnt make the Vaio software available to all and certainly not on any non Sony Laptop/ Desktop
Is the DVD bd you refer to the same as an ACVHD disc?
If so, Nero Vision or Ulead MF6+ can also have clips as thumbnail in a menu
