As the title says - my sony broke and i want a good budget replacement but also need to be able to play/edit my old tapes recorded on the sony. i don't think i have any in LP.

Generaly yes,but sony tapes are different than most in that they are wet head type as apposed to dry head this can at times cause problems in that a camcorder or player does not like playing one type or the other or may give problems when tapes are a mixture of both types.ps sorry audrew you were not there when i started,i am going from personal experience,also our clubs dv player will not play sony tapes at all [a pain]

i will play it safe and stick with sony - is there much difference between sony and canons budget DV models?

Chris tal k was about tapes and I have lost a camcorder from mixing tapes , so even if they are all identical now, I play safe and stick to Sony tapes
It is a coincidence tha ll my camcorders are Sony. I have used excellent Canons and Panasonics
My last use was with the Canon XHA1 .. that was a joy to use
