Cheaper cards with the sony CX11E or need to use sony own?

I'm trying to tread the minefield that is a new HD camcorder purchase and at the moment I'm leaning towards the Sony HDR CX11E. The only thing stopping me is the rediculous price of sony pro duo cards. I have a real issue with sony ripping people off left right and centre by constantly creating their own formats and forcing them on people and I normally avoid purchasing anything sony for this reason.

Can anyone tell me if a can use other makes of pro duo cards with this camcorder or am I forced into buying sony own cards at twice the price?

If I cant use the cheaper cards I'll buy the Canon HF11.

Thanks in advance

It will be able to use any brand of pro duo. They all conform to the same specs and other manufacturers pay Sony a royalty to produce them.

The one thing I hate about my Sony is that is uses crappy pro duo cards rather than the cheaper, faster, and higher capacity SDHC variety. Fortunately my SR12 has a 120GB hard disk so I avoid the extra Sony fleecing.

If I was going for a card only camcorder I would not buy a Sony. The Canon HF100 offers equal picture quality for a much cheaper price (currently £409.99 from Amazon after Canon £50 cashback).

Thanks m8, I'll look in to that. I suspect the one you state may have a lower MP count for stills?? I place quite a lot of enphasis on this area as I plan to use it as a still camera too.

I'll certainly check it out though

The CX11 is about £100 more than the HF100 - before allowing for the cost of Memory Sticks.

For not much more than that you could buy a very decent compact camera and get vastly, massively better stills! Not that I'm saying the HF100 doesn't take as good a photos as the CX11 - I've no idea if I'm honest!
