8mm player ???

Now I'm in trouble !
I have been promising for a couple of years to transfer old 8mm camcorder tapes ( of the kids etc) to DVD. I go to make a start today and the camcorder won't work !
I have spent hours looking for some sort of "player" that will connect to my DV Camcorder, so I can transfer to the PC, but can't find anything.

Could anybody help out please... point me in the right direction for either the player or even an 8mm camcorder ( don't really want E-bay as afraid of chewing the tapes up )

Thanks

Re: 8mm player ???

Are the tapes video8 or Hi8?
If video8 then either a video8 or Hi8 cam will play them, but Hi8 tapes will only play on a Hi8 cam.
If you can find one then a Sony Digital8 camcorder with analogue playback (only a few models, so be careful) will play them and connect directly to the PC via firewire for capture.

However all these players/camcorders are old formats and not easy to find new any more. I would therefore expect you would need to look at second hand - but there might be a few old stock items around if you search on the net.

Mark.

Re: 8mm player ???

A backwards compatible Digital 8 model would be best for digitising your old tapes ...and if advertised as such is likely to have a good re-sale value once you've finished your transfers. The list below has been compiled from my own notes taken over a number of years. I believe it's accurate.

All Sony Digital 8 PAL (UK system) models. Models marked * will also play old 8mm analogue PAL recordings made in Standard 8, HI8, in both (SP) and (LP) modes.

Re: 8mm player ???

Thanks .. that was quick... it's Video 8.

It's working again now and I just managed to transfer 1 tape onto the PC.
First it won't play at all, now it's just transferred 1 hour onto the PC & the battery is still showing FULL !

Don't think I have too much faith in how long the thing is going to last so I'd better charge the batt again and have another go tomorrow ..only 34 more tapes to go
