SD9 HD, or DV on a non-HD TV ?

I have a small Canon mvx450 DV camcorder which goes in my pocket when I'm on holiday.

When I get back I like to edit the footage, add music, etc.

I am tempted by the new Panasonic SD9 but I don't have a HD TV. Does the AVHCD footage playback on a non-HD TV and how does it compare to DV ? Would it be better than the footage from my Canon.

And for editing, I will be using a high spec laptop (not bought yet) 2.5ghz Core2Duo processor, 256mb graphics card, 4Gb Ram, 320Gb (7200rpm) hard drive. Will this cope with editing the AVHCD ?

And can I save HD footage to a DVD ? How much ? or do I need a Blu-Ray drive for that ?

When my current TV breaks, I will be getting a HD TV so I'm planning ahead.

AVCHD does not playback on non-HD TV as Hi def. The limitation would be the use of composite video which is the least good quality way to trnasfer video. For HiDef component and HDMI are far superior

It will compare, but may not be better ( It wont be worse for sure unless your current camcorder has s-video whichis better than composite)

You can put Hi def footage as a data or create an AVCHD disc , How much would depend on which bitrate the AVCHD was encoded it. At most 20min I imagine

Very helpful information, thanks.

Just to be clear, are you saying that I can plug the SD9 into my SD televsion and watch it back no messing? Obviously it won't be HD but, if I understand you correctly, it will be of comparable quality to a mid-range DV camera?

You can simply plug it into an SD TV and watch ( as long as you have the right cable)
As for quality, that is variable and may or may not be of comparable quality to a mid range DV camcorder
HDV ( tape) would be equal to or better than a MinIDV camcorder
As an example,, Canon HG 10 had fantastic HDMI / component Hi def output to a Hi gh def TV
The composite AV ( SD) was very underwhelming in comparison. Im not sure how the SD9 would perform in similar circumstances .
