Re: Canon fs100 - Video Editing

Just make sure the actual clips are fine: play them in Windows Media player or VLC
The FS100 outputs video as mpeg2
Windows Movie maker does not edit mpegs

Sony Vegas 9 certainly does, but it may be that the trial version will not allow you to edit mpeg files

I dont rate image mixer myself though Im unsure of why it isnt working
You could try downloading UleadVS ( or Corel) as they may allow it
In short

You dont have the right software (WMM is not it) and Image mixer is lacklustre
I suspect the full version of any of currently available software will do just fine
Ulead VS may actually allow this in trial but with reference to your ( other) thread on free good video editing software.. it doesnt exist
What might be "near free" are more recent versions of current software which may now be very affordable as the newest version are released
If you have the full Nero ( ver 6-9) on your system, Neros edting software Nero Vision will see your files and edit them even if it lacks the finnise of other more capable software

Dont think so.The recording format tends to be fixed
Why not just try downloading Uleads software
AFAIK , no camcorder records in WMV
WMM does support DV AVI but that is a tape format

Coming back to your question
I have suggested Ulead Video studio trial , Nero Vision or full version of any current video editing software. including the Sony you have which it seems is a trial version and it may be that mpeg editing is disabled in it
WMM will not edit your files,
So which other suggestions did you wish for?

Re: Canon fs100 - Video Editing

Other than making sure all your codecs are up-to-date I suggest having a look here:

Canon Vixia FS100 Review/Question .MOD - CNET Camcorders Forums

It goes on to mention a little piece of software called SDcopy, I used it when I had my FS100 (before I sent it back). I can't remember exactly what it does but its something along the lines of converting file types for use in Windows Media Player.....?

It may help..?

I agree that image mixer hasnt proved OK but if you spent £300+ buying the camcorder, a liitle more on software to enjoy its use would be money well spent IMHO
As it happens Video Studio 8 is way too old. Where did that come from????
The software is now on ver 12 and the more recent versions support mpeg editing as do the fullversion of Vegas and Nero amongst others
Version 12 is HERE and I believe you can download a trial of the latest version

There are ways to convert to convert mpeg to any other format off camera but not in-camera. this would most certainly result in a drop in image quality though
The only way round this would be to accept the need to buy something that works ( software)
It may cost less than you think

Re: Canon fs100 - Video Editing

Taken from post 93 on the link I mentioned earlier;

"I purchased the Canon FS100 the other day and was trying to work with Windos Movie Maker. If I change the extension from MOD to .MPG, I can use the Windows Movie Maker to edit the file. The problem I am having is getting WMM to recognize the 16:9 format the file was recorded in.

The camcorder records in "Widescreen" and when I play the file in VLC PLayer it recognizes it as widescreen but not WMM. I even went into TOOLS>OPTIONS and changed the aspect to 16:9 but the video still shows as 4:3 with black bars on each side. The things in the video also look taller and thinner."

And and answer to the widescreen problem (post 94):
As I mentioned above,

"The widescreen problem has been solved in another forum by users of the JVC SD camcorder.
You need to download a small program called sdcopy and run it on your .mod files. It renames them to .mpg (if you haven't already done so) and fixes the widescreen tags. Apparently the tags are in the moi files and future video editors will be able to realize that.

The only problem with this solution is that after using sdcopy to fix the widescreen tags, when opened in VLC it will appear "double wide" but media player will see it as wide."

Worth a go...?

Re: Canon fs100 - Video Editing

... I downloaded Sony Vegas 9... there's video but no voice.... DAMN..... wth???? Help! PLEASE

-----

There is an issue with AC3 sound on the video with Sony Vegas 9. Check their support knowledgebase and search with keyword AC3. You will find 2 answers. Another for Vegas 9 and another for Vegas 9 platinum.
That's the way my Canon FS-10 sound problem got solved. FS-10 is same cam that FS-100, only with internal 8Gb memory.

But unfortunately I got a new problem. When using a video clip first time, everything is ok. After that preview is black, meaning missing. I'm still solving that.

I would like to use Sony Vegas cos it has so many more options for editing that for example Ulead Video Studio 11.5.

Update: Black preview is also solved. Sony's knowledgebase told to download and copy 2 files (mcdddec.dll and mcplug.dll) to folder C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\mcplug to make AC3 sound working. (BTW I have Vegas 9a platinum.) When I copy only mcdddec.dll and rename all my video files from .mod to .vob or .mpg or .avi, there are both sound and picture. I decided to rename copies of my .mod files to .vob. Original files I keep in safe so far.

I'm downloading Vegas 9b on the backround. Those bugs should be fixed there. But who knows what problems it will bring to me so if I get 9a working now, I will not update anymore.

Hope you got what I mean. Why it is possible to rename video files like that and they still work? What is the difference between those formats? More to search again:-)

How was that solved, easier if you state it than a search.. and does it have to do with the trial rather than full version?

You can always go back to 9a. Saying that Vegas updates tend to improve rather than create problems.

MOD files are in truth typically proprietary mpeg files .. which is why they work. The VOB files on a DVD video are also mpeg files and can be renamed
