DCR-HC40E Repair v New Purchase

I have a Sony HC40E which is just over 4 years old. I've got the documented battery drain problem so am faced with a choice:

1) pay £175 to get it repaired by Sony or
2) buy a new camcorder

If I buy a new one, I'm probably looking at spending £300 max so probably going for MiniDV again.

Any opinions on this?
